POSITION AVAILABLE: Assistant/Associate Professor (tenure track) and/or Assistant/Associate Professor of Clinical Zoological Companion Animal Medicine and Surgery (clinical track)
SALARY: The salary range for this position is $183,100-$236,400. “Off-scale salaries” and other components of pay i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step) are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions, qualifications, and experience.
QUALIFICATIONS: Veterinarian with advanced clinical training and experience in companion exotic animal medicine and surgery. Board certification by the American College of Zoological Medicine required. For the Professor series faculty only, an advanced degree (MS and/or PhD) or experience mentoring in research is required. Documented research record or potential to develop a focused research program in the discipline of zoological companion animal medicine or surgery is required. Demonstrated aptitude/experience in teaching in both clinical and didactic settings is desired. The individual must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere. A valid license to practice veterinary medicine in California is required prior to beginning clinical duties (California Business and Professions Code Section 4846-4857). Individuals not eligible for a full California license can obtain a University License (California Business and Professions Code Section 4848.1).
RESPONSIBILITIES: Teaching: Responsibilities include: 1) participation in lectures and laboratories in the DVM professional curriculum with the focus on companion exotic animal medicine and surgery; 2) clinical teaching of veterinary students in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH), including California Raptor Center and contracted zoological collections; 3) participation in the ACZM clinical (resident) training programs of the VMTH; and for the Professor series faculty 4) participation in the graduate academic programs (MS; PhD; MPVM) of the campus if applicable.
Clinical and Professional Competence: This position includes a clinical commitment to the Companion Exotic Animal Medicine and Surgery Service of the VMTH, depending upon Professor (50% commitment) or Professor of Clinical (70% commitment) Zoological Companion Animal series. The individual will be responsible for directing, instructing and supervising veterinary students and house officers; providing health care and service to patients; and advising and consulting with referring veterinarians and clients. Faculty will advance the discipline of zoological companion animal medicine within the VMTH, as well as locally and nationally, through participation and leadership in providing high-quality patient care in the hospital environment. Faculty is expected to establish a reputation for clinical excellence locally, regionally, and nationally, depending upon the level of appointment
Research and Creative Scholarship: For the Professor series faculty, development of a creative, productive basic and/or clinically-oriented research program in the discipline of Zoological Companion Animal Medicine and Surgery is a fundamental and indispensable requirement of the position, including publication of results in professional/scientific journals. Individuals will provide leadership in directing research projects of residents and graduate students. Highest consideration will be given to those with an established research focus. Faculty in the Professor of Clinical series are expected to advance the clinical discipline through the creation and dissemination of new knowledge with documentation from peer-reviewed publications. Creative/scholarly activities are required for individuals in this series, but in view of the increased responsibilities for clinical service and teaching, the type of scholarly activity may focus primarily on integrating/improving clinical care, conducting clinical research studies, and/or improving veterinary medical education.
Service: University and public service through committee work, participation in professional organizations, and other appropriate means is required. Active participation and engagement in developing/maintaining continuing education activities of the VMTH as it relates to companion avian and exotic animal medicine and surgery is required.
