Electrician (7345) SF Recreation and Parks Temporary Provisional
ABOUT THE STRUCTURAL MAINTENANCE SECTION
The Structural Maintenance Section is organized into 10 shops thirteen 13 trades: Carpenters Cement Masons Electricians Heavy Equipment Operations (includes: Operating Engineers Truck Drivers Laborers and Riggers) Iron Workers Painters Roofers Sheet Metal Workers and Stationary Engineers. Structural Maintenance has two major functions: routine repairs and maintenance and deferred maintenance projects. Routine repairs and maintenance are performed daily to secure the safety and guarantee the operations of our facilities. Deferred maintenance includes capital-funded projects and philanthropy projects initiated through funding provided by donors for park improvements.
Job Description
Under general supervision performs skilled electrical work in connection with the installation maintenance repair and alteration of electrical systems under 12000 volts machinery and equipment; may exercise work direction over craftsmen involved in such work; and performs related duties as required.
Requires responsibility for: print reading installing maintaining testing and repairing electrical equipment; inspecting and repairing generating equipment; cutting bending and installing rigid conduit electrical metallic tubing (EMT) and pulling conductors; setting up and using ladders staging aerial lift trucks and light towers and use of personal protective equipment (PPE); working with high voltage (277 Volt - 480 Volt) equipment and installation maintenance testing and repair of traffic signal equipment. Troubleshooting energized circuits with appropriate PPE; digging with shovel; climbing ladders up to 130 high working at 130 platform heights; rigging and installing heavy materials (light poles/transformers/concrete boxes); computer/mobile phone skills for time entry in TMA system detailed job updates sourcing manufacturer tech support and email communications; attending daily mornings meeting to learn train and apply LEAN process improvement fundamentals at work.
Examples of Important and Essential Duties
According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109 the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.
- Installs maintains tests and repairs electrical distribution systems and devices such as lighting power circuits fixtures transformers programmable logical controls (PLC) motors motor controls process controls auxiliary lighting systems life safety systems electronic controls relays regulators branch circuit breakers main distribution circuit breakers irrigation control systems and other related electrical equipment which may be in confined spaces.
- Inspects and repairs generating equipment and UPS (uninterrupted power supply) and its auxiliary accessories.
- Cuts bends and installs rigid conduit electrical metallic tubing (EMT) and pulls current carrying conductors.
- Erects and uses ladders scaffolds staging aerial lift trucks and light towers.
- Communicates via two-way radios and telephones.
- May install maintain test and repair traffic signal equipment.
- Prepares and submits reports for time and material used reports on work accomplished.
Nature of work involves physical effort and dexterity in the use of fingers limbs and body; exposure to hazardous environments where injuries may be encountered. This position may also be required to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions & may also require you to work rotating shifts nights weekends holidays and emergency overtime if needed.
Camp Mather Assignment Requirement: This position may be required to temporarily live and perform duties at Camp Mather a campground operated by the Recreation and Parks Department located in the Sierra Mountains near Yosemite. Camp Mather work crew assignments typically last between two (2) and four (4) weeks twice a year during the spring and fall seasons before and after Camp Mather season. Additional work periods at Camp Mather may be required. Food and Lodging are provided at Camp Mather and a REC vehicle is supplied.
Qualifications :
Minimum Qualifications:
Experience : One (1) year of journey-level electrician experience.
Education : Completion of a recognized Apprenticeship program (Inside Wireman Apprenticeship).
License and Certification: Possession of a valid California Class C drivers license
Substitution: Additional experience as a journey-level electrician may be substituted for the required electrician apprenticeship on a year-for-year basis.
Six years of inside wireman experience equivalent to journey-level as defined by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers may be substituted for the required experience.
Desirable Qualifications: The stated desirable qualifications below may be considered at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring
- Experience programming lighting control panels boilers pump systems including VFDs sewage and clean water;
- Experience troubleshooting advanced addressable concert lighting and sound equipment fire alarms and computer network wiring including fiber optics; and
- Knowledge of LEAN process improvement principles and practices.

Selection Procedure
The selection process will include evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements. Depending on the number of applicants the Department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate qualifications of candidates. If this becomes necessary only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will be invited for an interview.
Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed to advance through all of the steps in the selection process.
