Special Education Academic Tutor (Literacy & Math Support)

About the Role: As an Tutor at Tutor Me Education, you’ll provide personalized, one-on-one tutoring to students with special needs in their homes. You will be responsible for helping students with daily activities, offering moral support, and delivering tailored instruction based on their Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

We are currently hiring for multiple positions across all cities in Venice, CA

Details:

• In-Person Tutoring in Venice, CA
• Schedule: 10 hours, 2 sessions a week for 1.15 hours
• Pay range is between $25 and $35

Ideal Candidate:

• Experience working with students with autism and developmental disabilities
• Strong background in foundational literacy, including phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, and sight word instruction
• Experience supporting reading fluency and comprehension development
• Solid understanding of foundational math concepts, including number sense, basic operations, and problem-solving
• Skilled in breaking down multi-step tasks into manageable steps
• Experience implementing structured, individualized lesson plans (no homework provided)
• Knowledge of positive behavior support and transition strategies
• Patient, consistent, and confident in managing transitions and maintaining engagement
• Creative in incorporating student interests into lessons to increase motivation

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop and implement structured, individualized literacy and math lessons aligned with current performance levels
• Provide explicit, systematic instruction in phonemic awareness, letter–sound correspondence, blending, and decoding
• Reinforce sight word recognition using repeated practice and multi-sensory strategies (visuals, manipulatives, movement, verbal repetition)
• Build reading fluency gradually and check comprehension using guided questioning
• Support writing development, including letter formation, spacing, spelling, and sentence construction
• Use sentence frames, visual supports, modeled examples, and verbal rehearsal to strengthen written expression
• Provide fine-motor support and alternative tools as needed
• Reinforce math skills with emphasis on number sense, basic operations, and conceptual understanding
• Break down multi-step math problems using visual models and hands-on materials
• Maintain predictable session routines with clear expectations and smooth transitions
• Incorporate scheduled breaks and implement a structured reward system
• Use printable coloring pages (laminated) as positive reinforcement
• Integrate student interests (e.g., Star Wars, superheroes, Avengers, LEGO, Guardians of the Galaxy) into lessons to increase engagement and participation
• Provide progress updates to caregivers as appropriate
