The Department

The purpose of the Human Resources Department is to maximize the productivity of an organization by optimizing the effectiveness of its employees. The Department's focus is centered on innovative and strategically acquiring, developing, and retaining talent by continuously nourishing the organization's greatest resource in an effort to affect positive change. Human Resources is concerned with the development of both the employees and the organization in which they operate.

The Department is engaged not only in securing and developing the talents of individual employees, but also in implementing programs that enhance communication and collaboration between people in order to nurture organizational development. Employees who are engaged and aligned with the City's vision and values will always contribute to the overall mission of the organization. The Position

Under the direction of appropriately designated staff, the Intern will perform entry-level responsible and professional customer service, and clerical and administrative duties for the Human Resources Department. The Intern will work on various substantive projects, and in the process, acquire an overview of city government.

It is the City's hope that the Intern selected to participate in this internship will develop a better understanding of their community and City operations and that the experience will pave the intern's road toward personal growth and a productive career in local government.

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed by interns. Functions may be added, modified or removed to meet the needs of the city.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to perform the following essential tasks and duties:

  • Effective public speaking and interpersonal skills; confidence in communicating facts and information to city staff and to the public.
  • Strong writing skills, with an ability to organize/analyze data, type and proofread a variety of documents including memos, rough drafts, forms, copies or notes.
  • Perform a wide variety of routine clerical work including filing.
  • A self-motivated work ethic with the ability to be a supportive team member and independent worker and a desire to work in a diverse team setting.
  • An enthusiasm to help the City of Pico Rivera meet objectives.
  • The ability to plan, organize and prioritize multiple tasks and projects.
  • Work with minimal supervision.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Candidates Must Be

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Proficiency in the following programs is desired: Word, Excel, Access and Teams

Education And Experience

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled part-time or full-time in a degree-seeking program at an accredited college or university at the time of application and throughout the internship.(applicants must submit proof of current enrollment with application materials or via email to ***email_hidden***)
  • Must have and maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.5 or higher on a 1.0 - 4.0 scale.
  • Bilingual in Spanish is desired.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this class, the employee is regularly required to sit; talk or hear, in person and by telephone; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate standard office equipment; and reach with hands or arms. The employee occasionally walks and stands and lifts and moves records and documents weighing 25 pounds or less.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Mental Demands

While performing the duties of this class, the employee is regularly required to use oral and written communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve problems; observe and interpret data and situations; use math and mathematical reasoning; learn and apply new skills or information; perform highly detailed work on multiple concurrent tasks; work under changing and intensive deadlines with frequent interruptions; and interact with City officials, media, citizens groups, employees and others encountered in the course of work.

Work Environment

The employee works under typical office conditions, and the noise level is usually quiet.

  • A valid Class C California Driver's License and a safe driving record throughout the course of employment. City employees are registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles, Employee Pull Notice Program.
  • Proof of car insurance (to be eligible for mileage reimbursement based on the IRS issued rates).

Veteran's credit will amount to 10 points to be added to the interview score. Proof of honorable discharge must be submitted with the application materials in order to be eligible for veteran's credit. Veterans who wish to utilize this credit must have served on a full-time basis (not reserve or auxiliary) in the armed forces for a minimum of six months (180 days).

TESTING

Candidates who pass all qualifying phases of the recruitment process (e.g., minimum qualification review, written and/or oral examinations) will be placed in an eligibility pool for the hiring department to initiate the selection process. Please note: recruitment timelines may vary. Updates will be provided to candidates throughout the process.

City Hall is open Monday through Thursday 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM. Hours will vary between 7:00 AM and 5:30 PM. This position may also be required to work non-traditional hours including nights, early mornings, weekends, and holidays based on special events, community group meetings, and City Council meetings.

Physical/Background Check

Emergency Disaster Worker
