Director of Engineering

About the role

We’re looking for a Director of Engineering to lead our Infrastructure and Backend Engineering teams. This leader will play a critical role in shaping our technical roadmap, hiring and mentoring engineering talent, and ensuring scalable, secure, and performant systems.

The ideal candidate brings a strong blend of technical depth and leadership — with hands-on experience designing backend systems and data models at scale, especially in cloud-native environments (AWS preferred). You will help us scale our engineering practices and product infrastructure as we accelerate growth and expand our footprint in healthcare.

Leadership & People Management:

• Build, mentor, and grow a high-performing engineering team across infrastructure and backend discipline
• Set clear technical direction, facilitate architectural alignment, and foster a culture of accountability, learning, and impact.
• Collaborate with other leaders in Product, Data, and Go-to-Market to align engineering execution with company objectives.

Technical Strategy & Architecture

• Drive design and implementation of robust, secure, and extensible backend services and APIs.
• Architect scalable data models and data infrastructure to support complex healthcare workflows and automation.
• Provide deep individual contributor-level guidance on backend and data system design, helping raise the technical bar across the team.

Cloud Infrastructure & DevOps

• Own our AWS-based infrastructure strategy, including deployment pipelines, observability, and incident response practices.
• Champion automation, reliability engineering, and cost-effective infrastructure design.
• Ensure compliance with HIPAA, SOC 2, and other relevant healthcare security standards.

Execution & Delivery

• Prioritize and manage engineering initiatives with a strong bias toward delivery, iteration, and product impact.
• Define and implement best practices for quality, performance, testing, and technical documentation.

What we’re looking for

• 10+ years of engineering experience with 3+ years in an engineering leadership role managing a team of 8-10 peopl e
• Strong technical background as a backend engineer or architect with IC-level fluency in system design, data modeling, and distributed systems.
• Expertise in AWS-based environments and modern DevOps/infra tooling.
• Experience leading cross-functional teams and working in fast-paced, product-driven environments.
• Proven success scaling engineering teams and systems from early stages to maturity

Bonus Points If:

• Experience with FHIR, HL7, EHRs, claims data, or other healthcare standards.
• Experience working in HIPAA-regulated environments or building SOC 2-compliant systems.
• Experience deploying ML models in production systems or working with ML engineering teams.
• Based in or open to working from our San Francisco HQ
