STUDENT ASSISTANT
Job Description and Duties

With the direction and supervision of a first-line supervisor, the Student Assistant, in a learning capacity, is responsible for assisting in a wide variety of work related to taxes. The Student Assistant examines confidential records, collects evidence for further actions, completes case summaries, and provides customers with tax law information. The Student Assistant completes training and meets regularly to discuss findings and recommendations with leads and supervisors. Some tasks include:
• Initial screening of source documents to determine, if possible, tax liabilities exist on private party purchases of vehicles, vessels, aircraft, and mobile homes.
• Analyze tax returns and reports to determine the acceptability of deductions, correct tax reporting, and proper computation.
• Contact customers via telephone or written correspondence to obtain information and documents needed.
• Establishes estimated values of vehicles, vessels, or aircraft using various tools available.
• Performing other job-related duties as required.
Under Government Code 14200, this position may be eligible for partial telework for eligible candidates residing in California. All telework/hybrid schedules require staff to report to the office a minimum number of days per week. Schedules are subject to change.
Currently, per the California Budget Act of 2025, all California Department of Tax and Fee Administration salaries are subject to the provisions of the State of California’s Personal Leave Program.
