Bookstore Manager
Summary
Spirit Rock is seeking a Bookstore Manager for approximately 30 hours per week. The Bookstore Manager is responsible for overseeing and managing the operation of the bookstore which sells books, gifts and tools used for meditation practice. The bookstore is open seven-days per week from 10am-2pm plus additional evening and weekend hours depending on Spirit Rock’s program calendar.
Primary Responsibilities
The Bookstore Manager is responsible for planning, organizing and managing bookstore activities which include:
- Ordering books, gift items, and supplies, and maintaining stock and inventory
- Using and maintaining our existing inventory and POS systems to sell and track inventory
- Developing and implementing operating procedures as well as recommending appropriate, related policies
- Staffing the bookstore directly as well as training and supervising bookstore volunteers and extra-hires to staff the bookstore during ongoing hours of operation
- Preparing and managing the yearly bookstore budget
- Interfacing with Accounting to maintain accounting records of spending, receipts of inventory, and customer payments
- Oversees charging of payments and transfer of cash receipts to accounting
- Coordinating with retreat teachers for special book requests, book signings, and other teacher preferences
- Resolving customer issues associated with merchandise and purchases
- Continue ongoing relationship with American Booksellers Association (ABA) which allows Spirit Rock’s online bookstore platform
- Maintain book lists on the Spirit Rock online bookstore
- Maintain the overall cleanliness and beauty of bookstore displays
In addition to working on a day-to-day basis with the staff in Retreat Operations, this person will work in collaboration with our Communications and Programs teams to consider and suggest special event ideas as well as book needs for current programs.
Knowledge and Skills Requirements
- Knowledge of bookstore retail operating principles, cashiering, budgeting, management principles, digital inventory, POS systems and accounting
- Knowledge and interest in Buddhism and Spirit Rock Teachers with specific interest in teachings in the Theravada tradition
- Knowledge and interest in understanding new publications and gift ideas; a creative ability to keep the inventory fresh and move old inventory out
- Knowledge and interest in Diversity Equity and Inclusion issues especially how they relate to Dharma books and programs
- Skills in display and decoration to ensure both an organized and beautiful shop
- Strong communication and follow-up skills in working with teachers and staff in planning book needs
- Experience in managing other part-time staff and/or volunteers
- Well-organized, friendly and approachable with a background in customer service
- Ability to work with a diverse group of people
- Strong skills in writing reports and correspondence
- Ability to perform consistently, even under pressure
Working Conditions
Ability to lift up to 30 pounds
Employment Status: .8 FTE (30 hours/week), non-exempt
Schedule: Varies; fully onsite; evening and weekend hours required
Compensation: $30 - $32/hr
