Accounting Manager - Remote

- Location/Job Environment: Remote with occasional travel to the California Bay Area
- Full Accounting Cycle Ownership – Manage the accuracy and productivity of day-to-day activities of accounts payable/vendor setup, cash disbursements, invoicing/billing, accounts receivable, fixed asset acquisition and disposition records, amortization schedules, general & entity accounting, cost accounting, inventory management, balance sheet, and revenue recognition
- Payroll Leadership – Ensure accuracy, efficiency, and compliance of biweekly and supplemental payroll
- Job Costing & Reporting – Compile and analyze weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for internal and external use, including tax prep, on branch, regional, divisional, and consolidated levels
- Cross-Functional Problem Solving – Collaborate with operations, branch managers, and leadership to streamline workflows and reduce bottlenecks
- Cash Management – Monitor daily cash positions, forecast cash needs, and flag issues early
- Compliance & Controls – Maintain adherence to GAAP, tax, and industry-specific compliance requirements; strengthen internal controls.
- External Collaboration – Work seamlessly with fractional controllers, offshore administrators, and banking/CPA partners.
- System Mastery – Administer and optimize Aspire ERP, Inova Payroll, QuickBooks Online, and related integrations. Act as the financial lead on Aspire system administration, ensuring correct setup of services, markups, cost codes, and reports
- Build for Scale – Create processes, controls, and reporting systems that support future $50M+ revenue, including participation in the development of annual budgets and forecasts
- Core working hours aligned with the Pacific Time Zone (8:00am-5:00pm), regardless of home location in the U.S.
- Virtual collaboration with daily/weekly video calls, real-time chat participation, and proactive communication is essential
- Full participation in virtual company events, training, and cross-department projects
- In-person travel 3-6 times annually and 2-3 days each for company-wide training, meetings, and team-building events. Travel expenses are company-paid.
- Full engagement - remote work is not “out of sight, out of mind.” You will actively build relationships with management, department leads, and operational teams to ensure strong functional alignment and cultural integration.
- 7+ years progressive accounting experience in an accounting or financial management role, with at least 3 years in a management or controller role.
- Proven track record of scaling financial processes for a growing service-based company — ideally in landscaping, construction, facilities management, or another labor/materials/equipment-intensive industry
- Experience with landscape industry benchmarks and seasonal planning a plus
- Advanced skills in Quickbooks Online, ERP (Aspire strongly preferred), Google Workspace, Excel, and payroll systems (Inova strongly preferred)
- Strong understanding of job costing, recurring revenue contracts, ancillary service add-ons, and WIP accounting.
- Detail oriented with the ability to organize, prioritize, coordinate, multi-task, follow through and complete work accurately while meeting deadlines
- Productive with efficient use of workday and management of workload
- Be self-directed, dependable, and take initiative
- Responsible and professional with a strong work ethic, integrity (personal, profession, and process), reliability and confidentiality
- Be a continuous learner, demonstrating the desire and ability to gain knowledge, open to coaching and continuous improvement, and collaboration with non-financial managers
- Impeccable analytical, quantitative, and organizational skills with the ability to analyze complex issues, identify alternative solutions and communicate them effectively to management
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Accounting, Finance or related discipline is preferred. CPA or CMA a plus
- Experience with California-based companies is a plus, especially navigating labor compliance and payroll complexity
- Comfortable cleaning up data, building processes from scratch, and improving existing workflows.
- Experience working remotely with distributed teams while maintaining high engagement, accountability, and excellent communication
- Close Speed and Accuracy - month-end close completed within 10 days with no material errors
- Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable Aging - proactively manage both AR and AP to optimize cash flow, maintain strong relationships with clients and vendors, and minimize financial risk
- Process Improvements - measurable efficiency gains
