POSITION : Camp Counselor I Hybrid Counselor / Nightwatch
REPORTS TO : Director, Camp
STATUS : Seasonal Full-Time, Exempt Camp Worker (as defined in Section 18897 of the Health and Safety Code) Will be needed approximately between Mid-June and Mid-August. Final dates will be confirmed at offer.

SALARY RANGE : $77.71-$87.71/day – Daily Rate (per CA Labor Code 1182.4) – paid semi-monthly

Founded in San Francisco in 1902, the LightHouse’s purpose is to promote the independence, equality and self-reliance of people who are blind or visually impaired. The LightHouse is currently in a period of growth, increasing our capacity to serve more low-vision and blind clients.

OVERVIEW:
As a residential camp for the blind, counselors are responsible for the overall provision of a traditional camp experience to all blind and visually impaired campers. This includes but not limited to: inventing new blind-friendly programming, motivating campers to use non-visual techniques, adapting all activities so that all campers can participate fully regardless of their level of vision. Counselors should encourage active participation in camp meals, clean-up and other daily functions through fun activities. Counselors provide supervision to recreational activities, create educational experiences, promote independence and supervise the health and safety of children and adults. Applicants must also have the ability to work with campers that have secondary disabilities (developmental, hearing impairments and/or mobility restrictions).
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- High School graduate
- Some college education preferred
- Current First Aid and CPR certifications
- Previous work in a camp, school, or community service setting
- Experience working with individuals who are blind/visually impaired preferred
- Knowledge of Braille and/or sign language preferred
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Overall Responsibilities (All Sessions)
This position carries core responsibilities that apply across all training periods and camp sessions. While specific duties may shift depending on the session type, the following expectations remain consistent throughout the summer:
- Support overall camp operations as needed, including program transitions, daily logistics, and coordination with daytime and overnight staff.
- Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and strong situational awareness at all times.
- Communicate clearly, respectfully, and in a timely manner with supervisors, teammates, and campers.
- Follow all camp policies, safety procedures, and accessibility standards.
- Participate in required trainings, meetings, and evaluations.
General Counselor Responsibilities (Adult & Family Camp Sessions)
During Adult and Family Camp sessions, this role functions as a Camp Counselor I – General Counselor, with responsibilities including:
Camper Support, Supervision & Development
- Assist in the supervision, guidance, and organization of campers within living units, program areas, and shared camp spaces to support positive, inclusive experiences.
- Apply principles of adult development, disability awareness, and blindness awareness to foster independence, confidence, and meaningful relationships.
- Ensure campers are supervised appropriately and that camp safety guidelines are followed at all times.
Program Support & Engagement
- Assist in developing and implementing camp activities aligned with the camp’s mission, values, and program outcomes.
- Support and co-lead activities across multiple program areas, adapting activities to meet participant interests and abilities.
- Participate actively in assigned program areas, evening programs, and all-camp events.
Health, Safety & Well-Being
- Maintain high standards of health and safety for campers and staff.
- Support daily camper needs and identify concerns related to physical, emotional, or behavioral well-being.
- Communicate concerns promptly to the Camp Director, Program Leadership, or Health Care Manager as appropriate.
- Assist with monitoring the safe use and care of camp facilities and equipment.
Role Modeling & Collaboration
- Serve as a positive role model through professional conduct, attitude, and adherence to camp policies.
- Maintain clear, respectful, and supportive communication with campers, fellow staff, and leadership.
- Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and evaluations as required.
Nightwatch Responsibilities (Sessions with Minors)
During camp sessions that include minors (excluding Family Camps), this role transitions to a Nightwatch position, with responsibilities including:
Overnight Supervision & Safety
- Remain awake and alert for the entirety of the assigned overnight shift (typically 10:00 PM – 7:00 AM).
- Provide active overnight supervision to ensure the safety, security, and well-being of campers.
- Remain in designated Nightwatch locations and conduct regular check-ins of cabins, restrooms, and common areas as directed.
Camper Support During Overnight Hours
- Be available to assist campers with nighttime needs, including bathroom support, illness, anxiety, or emergencies.
- Provide support in a manner that allows daytime counselors to rest while maintaining appropriate boundaries and supervision standards.
Communication & Incident Response
- Respond calmly and appropriately to overnight incidents, emergencies, or concerns.
- Follow established emergency procedures and immediately notify on-call leadership, medical staff, or emergency services when required.
- Document overnight incidents, concerns, and notable observations according to camp protocols and share reports with leadership at shift change.
Policy & Compliance
- Uphold all child safety policies, supervision standards, and mandated reporting requirements.
- Ensure overnight supervision practices align with camp policies, state regulations, and accreditation standards.

- Communicate regularly with supervisors, campers, and colleagues in our immediate teams and across the agency, ensuring 100% of verbal and written communication is clear, professional, effective, and done in a timely manner.
- Maintain 100% confidentiality of individual health, behavior concerns, and other personal information of campers and staff.
- Consistently learn and communicate a blindness-positive philosophy by applying current best practices in 100% of interactions, as assessed through regular supervisor, participant, and peer feedback.
- Consistently demonstrate respect and inclusivity by using culturally appropriate language and behavior in 100% of interactions, as assessed through regular supervisor, participant, and peer feedback
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be willing to live on camp premises
- Must be able to lift 70 pounds
- Ability to enforce safety and emergency procedures
- Ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity
- Physical ability to respond appropriately to situation requiring first aid
- Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness or injury)
- Possess the endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers
