5. Position Summary
We seek an experienced and clinically strong Nurse Manager II for our Labor & Delivery department in Santa Clara, CA. This leadership position is responsible for overseeing the operations of a high-volume L&D unit with 400+ monthly deliveries. The successful candidate will lead a team of nursing staff and clinical personnel in delivering exceptional, evidence-based patient care while managing complex operational, financial, and strategic initiatives. This role requires both clinical expertise and strong management acumen to drive quality improvements, ensure regulatory compliance, and foster a culture of collaboration and professional development across the department and healthcare continuum.
6. Must-Haves
- Minimum 5 years of experience as an Associate Nurse Manager or Department Manager in Labor & Delivery
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) strongly preferred
- Current California Registered Nurse License required at hire
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required at hire
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required
- Demonstrated experience managing high-volume L&D units with 400+ deliveries monthly
- Proven track record in healthcare leadership with ability to manage complex clinical operations
7. Primary Functions
Leadership & Team Development:
- Create and advocate for developmental opportunities for nursing staff and support personnel
- Build collaborative, cross-functional relationships across departments and service lines
- Hire, train, and develop talent; strategically evaluate team members for succession planning
- Set performance management guidelines and expectations; provide coaching and feedback to drive improvement
- Foster open dialogue, engagement, and motivation within the team and across departments
- Mentor direct reports in leadership skills and professional growth opportunities
Operations Management:
- Translate business plans into tactical action items for the L&D unit
- Oversee completion of work assignments and identify opportunities for continuous improvement
- Ensure all policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements are followed consistently
- Manage departmental payroll, non-payroll budget, and financial commitments with accountability
- Monitor and optimize resource allocation to ensure efficient staffing and equipment utilization
- Develop and implement reports capturing workflows and strategies to achieve performance targets
- Remove obstacles impacting performance and guide contingency planning as needed
Clinical Operations & Quality:
- Lead the implementation of best practice models and patient care delivery systems
- Drive continuous improvement in quality and safety of clinical practices and operations
- Hold staff accountable for maintaining compliance with The Joint Commission, federal, state, and local requirements, and the Nursing Practice Act
- Collaborate with physicians, healthcare providers, and multidisciplinary teams to achieve optimal patient care
- Delegate tasks related to investigation and resolution of patient/family/member concerns regarding care
- Ensure safe, standardized care delivery within a 24/7 operational environment
- Design and implement systems to evaluate and improve patient care across the care continuum
- Maintain clinical expertise and provide clinical supervision as required
Regulatory & Administrative Compliance:
- Design continuous survey readiness activities including mock rounds
- Develop procedures for preparing audit documentation and compliance reports
- Ensure departments' emergency preparedness and recovery plans are current and staff are trained
- Assist in design and implementation of emergency preparedness programs
- Collaborate with nursing clinical practice to ensure compliance with regulatory standards
Strategic Initiatives & Process Improvement:
- Lead and implement long-term cross-functional strategic projects for quality, service, and efficiency improvement
- Develop structured approaches for identifying root causes and implementing solutions to operational and clinical issues
- Collaborate with senior leadership on strategic plans to achieve integrated services across care continuum
- Lead project teams and monitor implementation of departmental and organizational initiatives
- Manage organizational change by adapting to new processes, best practices, and industry trends
8. Required Skills
- Clinical Nursing Expertise: Advanced knowledge of labor and delivery nursing practices, obstetric emergencies, and evidence-based perinatal care standards
- Leadership & Management: Proven ability to lead high-performing teams, manage complex operations, and drive organizational change
- Financial Acumen: Experience with budgeting, cost management, financial forecasting, and resource optimization
- Strategic Planning: Ability to develop long-term departmental strategies aligned with organizational goals and industry best practices
