Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of the Senior Management Auditor, the Associate Management Auditor (AMA) performs complex audits, reviews, advisory services, and examinations of the California Department of Education's internal operations, activities, programs, controls, and allegations of employee misconduct or fraud. Working independently, collaboratively, or as a lead auditor, the incumbent conducts all phases of engagements, including planning, fieldwork, and reporting , in accordance with Global Internal Audit Standards. The AMA is the full journey-level classification of the audit series.

Key responsibilities include evaluating Departmental processes, systems, and controls; evaluating compliance with federal, state, and departmental laws, regulations, and policies; and identifying significant operational deficiencies. The auditor conducts interviews; reviews, analyzes, and tests documentation/information; prepares applicable working papers to support work conducted utilizing various software applications; and develops well-supported findings and recommendations. Work products additionally include preparing clear, concise, and comprehensive audit or engagement reports and memos.

The AMA collaborates with management to define engagement scope and objectives, develops audit programs, and monitors progress to ensure timely completion within established budgets. The position also involves presenting findings to management, recommending corrective actions, and conducting follow-up activities to ensure implementation of recommendations.

When assigned as lead auditor, under guidance from the Senior Management Auditor, the AMA will coordinate audit or engagement tasks, assist in reviewing working papers for clarity and accuracy, and provide guidance and training to staff.

Additional responsibilities include maintaining professional competency through continuing education and performing special assignments as directed in support of division operations.

This position is subject to PLP 2025 and will have a monthly base pay reduction of 3% in exchange for 5 hours of leave credits through June 2027. Working Conditions

HYBRID

This position is headquartered in Sacramento and may be eligible for a hybrid telework schedule for eligible applicants residing in California. Currently, the hybrid telework schedule includes working remotely and working a minimum of 2 days per week in the office.
