Senior software engineer - planning
Who we are
Samsara (NYSE: IOT) is the pioneer of the Connected Operations™ Cloud, which is a platform that enables organizations that depend on physical operations to harness Internet of Things (IoT) data to develop actionable insights and improve their operations. At Samsara, we are helping improve the safety, efficiency and sustainability of the physical operations that power our global economy. Representing more than 40% of global GDP, these industries are the infrastructure of our planet, including agriculture, construction, field services, transportation, and manufacturing — and we are excited to help digitally transform their operations at scale.
Working at Samsara means you'll help define the future of physical operations and be on a team that's shaping an exciting array of product solutions, including Video-Based Safety, Vehicle Telematics, Apps and Driver Workflows, and Equipment Monitoring. As part of a recently public company, you'll have the autonomy and support to make an impact as we build for the long term.

Are you interested in building solutions that help our customers deliver their cargo safely, efficiently and save fleet costs in the process? If so, the Route Planning team might be the right fit for you.
We are a 0-1 team within Samsara that is actively building smart route planning solutions that model our customer's real world operations such as delivering to hard to reach locations on busy urban streets, maximize their fleet capacity by recommending the right vehicles to use, drive familiar routes or plan for those surprise deliveries, all the while staying compliant with the ever changing rules of commercial navigation
This is a remote position open to candidates residing in the US and Canada. Relocation assistance will not be provided for this role
In this role, you will:
- Own the design and implementation of backend services that effortlessly scale no matter size of the fleet.
- Work with the product manager and our UX designer closely to design and build intuitive UI interfaces that makes the route planner's job more efficient.
- Partner with the engineering manager and advocate for technical excellence on the team.
- Navigate tradeoffs between moving fast and building for the long term using customer impact as the north star.
- Act as a simplifier that ensures our solutions are built to serve our diverse customer base.
- Communicate your work to not just engineering audiences but also our sales partners to maintain a tight feedback loop.
- Champion, role model, and embed Samsara's cultural principles (Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team) as we scale globally and across new offices.
Minimum requirements for the role:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
- 8+ years of experience as a software engineer.
- Demonstrated ability executing in ambiguous environments and delivering customer value.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
An ideal candidate also has:
- Proven experience shaping and improving routing and navigation products.
- A passion for mentoring and helping junior engineers grow.
- A track record of thriving in 01 teams and scaling them through the post–startup phase.
- Experience operating as a tech lead or in a similar technical role directly impacting output of other engineers.
- The ability and willingness to engage directly with customers when needed
