Job Description and Duties

Join the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and become a key player in safeguarding the Golden State's ecological treasures! As a Senior Environmental Scientist Specialist in the Eastern Sierra Unit, you'll independently identify and assess environmental problems related to water use and management. You will develop and implement effective courses of action to address these issues, ensuring compliance with the California Endangered Species Act, California Environmental Quality Act, and other regulatory framework. Your work will include conducting sensitive scientific investigations and gathering data to support informed decision-making.

In addition to project management and scientific investigations, you will ensure all projects meet state and federal environmental standards, contributing to sustainable and responsible resource management. You will prepare detailed reports and documentation for regulatory approvals and permit applications, staying informed on environmental laws, administrative procedures, and policies to ensure project compliance. Your role will also involve fostering strong relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, including local communities, government agencies, and conservation organizations.

Working Conditions

Use of a computer keyboard and Microsoft Office software up to eight hours each day; complete office tasks that require sitting, standing, and walking to other locations; attend meetings and conference calls; Up to 6 hours of occasional travel, both ways via private or public transportation may be required to attend meetings and visit project sites, which may include early mornings, late nights, and weekends. Field work may involve hiking over possibly uneven, steep, and or wet terrain at project sites for reconnaissance and biological monitoring. Travel may also include operating or boarding a boat or driving a 4-wheel drive vehicle in rugged terrain. Per field work protocols, field work may be conducted under inclement weather conditions, carrying and moving a backpack (up to 30 lbs.). Responsible for keeping all issued program vehicles, equipment, machinery, and computers in good working condition. The position requires wearing a uniform identifying the employee as CDFW staff. This position offers the possibility of an office-centered telework agreement based on the Department’s current Telework Policy.
