The Controls Engineer for our Aliso Viejo, CA team will lead the electrical and software aspects of machinery and tooling projects, from small R&D initiatives to large-scale production systems, by collaborating with customers to define specifications and working cross-functionally to deliver integrated, high-performance solutions.

Job Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and integrate custom automation software solutions , including machine vision, robotics, feedback systems, and data management tools.
• Program and implement off-the-shelf components such as cameras, sensors, motors, and robots to create fully functional automated systems.
• Collaborate with customers to define and refine project requirements , including functional specifications and user interface needs (e.g., HMIs, MES integration).
• Coordinate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure seamless mechanical and electrical integration across projects.
• Support production teams during equipment debug, commissioning, and installation , ensuring smooth deployment and performance.
• Manage project timelines and budgets , proactively communicating progress and roadblocks with Project Managers.
• Oversee external suppliers and vendors , ensuring alignment with project goals and quality standards.
• Provide on-site support for equipment deployment and service , with occasional travel required.

Qualifications

• Education & Experience : Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering or related field, minimum 1 year of experience in controls design, PLC programming, or industrial automation (Hands-on experience gained through coursework could be acceptable).
• Software & Design Proficiency : Skilled in AutoCAD or SolidWorks for wiring diagrams; familiar with HMI/GUI and PLC development environments.
• Automation & Motion Control : Hands-on experience programming and tuning servomotors, stepper motors, and VFDs; field devices: sensors, actuators, and I/O signal processing.
• Vision & Robotics Systems : Experience integrating vision systems (e.g., Cognex, Keyence) and robotic platforms (e.g., Fanuc, ABB, Kuka, Mitsubishi, Epson).
• Programming & Integration : Knowledge of VB.NET, C, .NET, COM/ActiveX, & SDK/API implementation; understanding of communication protocols such as RS232, Ethernet/IP, & Modbus.
• Troubleshooting & Technical Skills : Proven ability to diagnose and resolve issues with automated equipment; able to read and interpret electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical schematics.
• Industry Familiarity : Exposure to pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and utility sectors; comfortable working in 24/7 manufacturing environments.
• Professional Attributes : Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, customer-focused mindset, and ability to thrive under pressure and uncertainty.
• Teamwork & Communication : Collaborative team player with excellent interpersonal, verbal, and presentation skills; highly organized and proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
• Travel Requirements : Willingness to travel up to 5% outside California and up to 20% to local customer sites.

Compensation & Benefits Highlights
($75,000 to $90,000) based on experience and qualifications
