Legal Assistant
Job Summary:
Legal Aid of San Bernardino (LASSB) has an immediate, full-time position a Housing Hotline Legal Assistant. The ideal candidates will have a demonstrated commitment to serving disadvantaged populations, will have knowledge of landlord tenant law, legal software programs used to prepare California Judicial Council Forms, and experience working in a high-volume environment. Ability to interact with a wide range of clients utilizing client-centered lawyering and trauma-informed frameworks. We will give preference to candidates who know poverty law and have experience providing services to low-income individuals.

Since its formation, LASSB has continually offered free legal services to the needy to protect their rights and assist them in remedying problems that affect their daily lives. We provide free legal services throughout the vast county of San Bernardino. Responsibilities:
- Maintain caseload of housing-related matters, under attorney supervision, including, but not limited to matters involving eviction defense and administrative hearings for subsidized housing.
- Work with attorney to prepare cases for trial and administrative hearings.
- Prepare legal work under the supervision of an attorney.
- Maintain detailed and accurate case notes and timekeeping in case management system.
- Using LegalServer, Lawya, and other programs, collect and maintain data required under the specific grant.
- Assist attorney with intake and initial client appointments.
- Prepare and maintain client files, electronic and/or physical.
- Interview clients. Effectively and efficiently communicate with clients including accurately relaying legal advice provided by the attorney.
- Prepare legal forms, pleadings, memoranda, correspondence, and other legal documents.
- Perform various clerical duties such as record-keeping, document copying, e-Filing, etc.
- Observe confidentiality of attorney-client relationship.
- May be required to work at clinics and/or workshops located in local courts
- Perform other duties as required to meet the needs of the organization.
Qualifications:
- Paralegal certificate, paralegal degree or associate’s degree
- Strong technical skills; including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams).
- Excellent analytical, communication, and listening skills.
- Strong writing skills.
- Capacity to meet strict deadlines.
- Great organizational skills with keen attention to detail.
- Language: Ability to read, write and communicate in English and Spanish
