St. Anthonys Foundation seeks a strategic, mission-driven Chief Development Officer (CDO) to lead all fundraising and donor engagement efforts. As a key member of the Executive Team, the CDO will be a thought partner to the CEO and an architect of fundraising modernization. The CDO will be leading change management efforts following organizational restructuring and a reduction in force.

This is a moment of transformation for St. Anthonys. The incoming CDO will join a newly aligned executive team and play a pivotal role in shaping a high-performing development functionone rooted in Franciscan values and built for long-term growth. We are seeking a dynamic leader with deep experience across all fundraising channels, a strong grasp of data-informed strategy, and a talent for cultivating meaningful, values-aligned donor relationships. The CDO will inspire others through collaboration, clarity, and a commitment to connecting philanthropy with purpose.

THIS POSITION IS HYBRID (FOUR DAYS IN OFFICE) AND LOCATED IN SAN FRANCISCO.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The Chief Development Officer reports to the CEO, Dr. Larry Kwan. The CDO manages six direct reports, including Manager of Corporate Relations, Events Manager, Individual Giving Manager, Volunteer Services Manager, and two Development Assistants.

OPPORTUNITY HIGHLIGHTS

Salary Range: $180,000 to $210,000

  • Vacation: Regular full-time employees accrue 120 hours (three weeks) / year.

CDO PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Fundraising Strategy & Revenue Growth

  • Design and lead a robust major gifts strategy, managing a personal portfolio of high-net-worth donors and prospects.
  • Cultivate and steward existing donors while building new relationships, especially in under-tapped segments like tech, next-gen philanthropists, and corporate partners.
  • Guide the CEO, Board, and senior leadership in major donor engagement using moves management and portfolio development.
  • Execute and co-lead the SAF 75th Anniversary Campaign, maximizing visibility and donor impact.
  • Diversification of Funding Sources
  • Develop and implement a plan to diversify funding streams beyond bequests, including:
  • Digital campaigns
  • Corporate giving
  • Next-generation donor engagement
  • Assess the feasibility and build a strategy for a Foundation Endowment, including campaign development, goal setting, and high-net-worth donor outreach.

Development Operations, Technology & Data

  • Champion the use of modern tools, including AI-driven donor segmentation, storytelling platforms, and CRM analytics.
  • Partner with the Development and Data Operations teams to ensure the accuracy and integrity of donor data, reporting, and tracking.
  • Establish and monitor key performance metrics to assess and strengthen fundraising strategies and processes.
  • Create and manage the annual development budget and income targets.

Grants & Institutional Giving

  • Direct the grants strategy, including proposal development, reporting, and capacity assessment.
    Communications & Donor Engagement
  • Oversee development collateral, including solicitations, acknowledgment materials, impact reports, and stewardship communications.
  • Collaborate with the Communications team to align public messaging with donor cultivation strategies.
  • Ensure accurate, current updates of development information across SAF communication platforms (e.g. LUCI).

Cross-Functional & Community Collaboration

  • Partner with the Finance team to ensure proper pledge tracking and documentation for audits.
  • Engage with the Board, Development Committee, and Executive Team through regular updates and reporting on development metrics.
  • Educate internal teams about development strategies and priorities.
  • Review, evaluate, and prioritize volunteer services work.

Team Leadership & Internal Management

  • Lead, mentor, and build a high-performing development team with clear roles, measurable goals, and opportunities for growth.
  • Foster a culture of trust, accountability, and philanthropy that reflects SAFs values.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, manage staffing needs, and ensure adherence to organizational policies.
  • Ensure accurate time tracking, approvals, and compliance with HR systems and procedures.
  • Hold regular team meetings and maintain visibility across the organization.

COMPETENCIES:

We are looking for candidates who have all or most of the following experience and attributes:

  • Seven years of progressively responsible fundraising experience, including a minimum one year of experience in planned giving.
  • Minimum of five years of professional experience in managing projects and teams.
  • Demonstrated success in directly soliciting and securing six-figure gifts from individuals.
  • Demonstrated success overseeing all philanthropic revenue streams including individual, institutional, and planned giving.
  • Experience working with and reporting with accuracy to a Board of Directors.
  • A proven track record of fundraising for a $25M or greater annual budget.
  • Experience working with CEO, team, and Board to grow budget exponentially over time.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to build and maintain relationships with donors, colleagues, and stakeholders.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and handle multiple assignments simultaneously with minimal supervision.
  • Change leadership experience: Track record leading through organizational change and growth
  • Bay Area fundraising fluency: Deep relationships or proven experience with SF/Silicon Valley philanthropy
  • Cultural alignment: Clear articulation of and respect for Franciscan values, even if not faith-based
  • Familiarity with modern tools: AI, digital giving platforms, and CRM metrics
  • Commitment to St. Anthony Foundation Statement of Values (see below) and a desire to work for a social services agency supporting underserved populations.
  • Comfort navigating change and rebuilding through vision, clarity, and collaboration.
  • Experience in the Bay Area funding landscape, with insider knowledge of major donor ecosystems, including tech and Catholic networks.
  • Experience in analytical, detail-oriented, story-driven, and relational fundraising, and understands and evaluates each philanthropic revenue streamincluding individual, institutional, and planned givingto guide decision-making, optimize investments, and drive sustainable growth.
  • Be highly self-motivated, dependable, and persistent, able to work independently and follow through on commitments.
  • A strong communicator and collaborator who builds effective working relationships across teams.
  • Experience in interacting with, reporting to, and conveying key issues to the Board of Directors about key issues in development, strategic initiatives and financial goals and priorities.
  • A confident decision-maker with excellent leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Analytical and detail-oriented, with the ability to interpret data and communicate insights clearly in both verbal and written form.
