Driller’s Assistant (Geotechnical Drilling)

Location: Rancho Cordova
Job Type: Full-Time

Pay Rate: $25.00 – $35.00/hour DOE + overtime opportunities
Schedule: Must be flexible for out-of-town travel and extended project hours as needed

Pay range is based on comparable geotechnical drilling, field technician, and drilling helper roles in the greater Sacramento/Rancho Cordova market.

Position Overview

We are seeking a hardworking and safety-focused Driller’s Helper to support geotechnical drilling operations throughout Northern California. This position assists the Lead Driller with operating drill rigs, handling tooling and materials, maintaining equipment, and supporting soil and rock sampling activities in the field.

This is a physically demanding, hands-on role ideal for candidates who enjoy working outdoors, traveling to project sites, and being part of a collaborative field team. Candidates must be dependable, safety-conscious, and willing to work in varying weather and terrain conditions.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist the Lead Driller during geotechnical drilling operations and field investigations
• Handle drill rods, casing, augers, tooling, and other drilling equipment safely and efficiently
• Support soil and rock sampling activities including SPTs, Shelby tube sampling, and core runs
• Mix, pump, and handle grout materials as directed
• Load, unload, transport, and organize tools, materials, and supplies at project sites
• Perform routine equipment inspections, cleaning, fueling, and basic maintenance checks
• Maintain clean and organized job sites while following all safety procedures and company standards
• Assist with site setup, traffic control, and material movement as needed
• Follow field instructions, project specifications, and environmental/safety regulations
• Work collaboratively with drill crews, engineers, and field personnel to complete projects efficiently

Qualifications

• Commercial Driver License required (Class A or Class B)
• Previous experience in drilling, construction, general labor, geotechnical, environmental, or heavy equipment environments preferred
• Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull heavy materials and equipment regularly
• Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions and rugged terrain
• Ability to travel and work out of town when project demands require
• Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to safely use hand and power tools
• Knowledge of safety procedures and situational awareness on active job sites
• Reliable attendance, strong work ethic, and ability to work effectively within a team

Physical Requirements

• Frequently lift and carry 50+ lbs
• Ability to stand, bend, kneel, climb, and work long hours outdoors
• Comfortable working around heavy equipment and drilling machinery
• Ability to work overtime and travel as needed

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience assisting on geotechnical or environmental drilling projects
• OSHA 10 or OSHA 40 certification
• Familiarity with drill rigs, sampling methods, and field safety practices
• Experience towing trailers or operating support vehicles
