Physician - Anesthesiologist (Palo Alto)

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensing requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met the requirements at initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens, in accordance with VA Policy.
• Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved medical school.
• Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S.
• Residency training: Completed approved residency in an accredited program leading to eligibility for board certification. Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA programs are eligible for appointment as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), who must be fully licensed physicians and only appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Board certified or board eligible in Anesthesiology.
• Physical requirements: Must meet physical standards, including passing a physical exam and drug testing, and ability to lift 15-44 pounds, push, reach above shoulder, and other physical tasks.

Duties

• Provide high-quality anesthesia care for Veterans across various surgical and procedural specialties at the Palo Alto VA Medical Center.
• Offer care in both operating room and non-OR settings, supported by a dedicated anesthesia team.
• Participate in the VA's total rewards program, including recruitment incentives, student loan repayment, and comprehensive benefits.
• Perform pre-anesthesia assessments, develop anesthesia plans, administer anesthetics, monitor patients, manage airway and ventilation, and provide post-anesthesia care.
• Engage in quality improvement initiatives, collaborate with other services, and contribute to education and training.
