Job Description and Duties

The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) is seeking a driven, enthusiastic, and detail-oriented student to join its SAP Technical Operations team as a Student Assistant – SAP Security & BASIS.

In this role, the Student Assistant will work both independently and collaboratively with cross-functional teams to support DWR’s enterprise SAP landscape. The position provides hands-on experience assisting with SAP Security and BASIS administration functions, including user provisioning, access management, system documentation, and procedural support. A strong focus on customer service is essential, as the role supports SAP end users and helps ensure timely resolution of service requests.

The Student Assistant will gain practical experience in SAP system configuration, maintenance, and administration, contributing to system reliability, performance, security, and compliance with organizational standards. Responsibilities include monitoring system health, performing routine maintenance tasks, managing user access, and assisting in resolving incidents and service requests in alignment with established service-level agreements (SLAs).

Special Requirements

  1. Enrolled in nine (9) semester/eight (8) quarter units for undergraduate students or six (6) semester/four (4) quarter units for graduate students.
  2. Achieved a 2.0 grade point average in the most recently completed academic term.
  3. Declared a major related to the duties of the advertised position and enrolled in coursework required for that major.

Student Assistant employees are paid hourly and are limited to 1500 hours per 12 consecutive months.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Management Information Systems (MIS), or a closely related Information Technology field
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail
  • Clear and professional communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in a team-oriented environment
  • High level of integrity and dependability, with initiative, sound judgment, adaptability, and the ability to manage multiple tasks with appropriate supervision
