FULL DESCRIPTION: We are seeking a Commodity Manager to define and execute sourcing strategies for direct materials and critical outsourced manufacturing activities supporting complex equipment development and production. This role is responsible for supplier strategy, supplier performance management, sourcing execution, commercial negotiations, NPI sourcing support, and supply chain risk mitigation. The ideal candidate will have strong strategic sourcing experience, capital equipment industry experience, technical supplier management skills, and the ability to support a high mix, low volume manufacturing environment with a broad supplier base.
The selected candidate will be responsible for:
- Developing and executing sourcing and category strategies for assigned commodities and manufacturing services
- Owning supplier strategy, supplier performance management, and sourcing execution
- Managing key supplier relationships to support supply continuity, cost competitiveness, and technology alignment
- Segmenting the supply base to define preferred, strategic, and development suppliers
- Identifying single-source dependencies, capacity risks, and supply chain risks
- Executing mitigation actions, including alternate sourcing, dual sourcing, and capacity buffering
- Supporting product ramps and volume production through proactive supplier management
- Owning supplier performance management, including cost, on-time delivery, lead time, quality, capacity, and responsiveness
- Leading supplier escalations and corrective actions when performance gaps arise
- Negotiating commercial agreements, pricing, and terms to improve margins, shorten lead times, and stabilize supply
- Conducting regular supplier reviews and quarterly business reviews
- Leading sourcing activities for new product introduction and industrialization efforts
- Partnering with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Planning, Finance, and Program Management
- Supporting make/buy decisions, supplier selection, and design-for-manufacturability considerations
- Ensuring sourcing decisions align with global commodity strategies and long-term product roadmaps
- Analyzing spend to identify cost reduction, consolidation, and value engineering opportunities
- Using should-cost modeling, market intelligence, and total cost of ownership analysis to support sourcing decisions
- Driving year-over-year cost improvement initiatives while maintaining quality and supply resilience
- Coordinating sourcing activities to support inventory targets and production requirements
- Ensuring compliance with sourcing policies, procedures, and material control systems
- Monitoring key financial and operational metrics impacting sourcing and supplier decisions
- Helping bring structure to a broad and complex supplier base
- Supporting a dynamic, fast-paced environment with multiple suppliers, commodities, and global stakeholders
- Performing other duties as assigned
The selected candidate will also possess:
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain, or a related field required
- Equivalent professional experience may be considered
- 6+ years of experience in strategic sourcing functions required
- 8+ years of progressive responsibility in strategic sourcing preferred
- Experience in the capital equipment industry required
- Experience with back-end semiconductor capital equipment preferred
- Experience working globally highly preferred
- Experience working with large, complex electro-mechanical systems and machine fabrication preferred
- Experience in a high mix, low volume manufacturing environment preferred
- Experience managing a broad supplier base across multiple commodities
- Experience sourcing components such as sensors, heaters, sheet metal, milled parts, motors, cables, mechanical components, electrical components, or related materials preferred
- Knowledge of ERP/MRP systems required
- Oracle Cloud experience preferred
- Knowledge of JIT philosophies preferred
- Expert negotiation skills within an engineering or manufacturing environment
- Strong supplier performance management experience
- Strong contract negotiation, sourcing, purchasing, and supplier interface experience
- Ability to evaluate technical supplier issues and hold technical conversations with suppliers and internal teams
- Advanced analytical skills with the ability to use market data, spend analytics, and modeling
- Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and decision-making skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic, high-pressure environment
- Flexible, proactive, and self-starting mindset
- Strong written, verbal, and presentation communication skills
- Ability to interact effectively in a cross-functional environment with all levels of management and employees
- Ability to build internal relationships and influence procurement decisions
- Ability to work predominantly onsite in San Diego, CA with some flexibility
- Ability to work regular office hours and support global communication as needed
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods while reviewing sourcing data, supplier information, ERP/MRP systems, contracts, reports, specifications, and financial metrics
- Ability to communicate by phone, email, video meeting, and in person throughout the workday
- Ability to review supplier documentation, technical specifications, commercial agreements, market data, spend analytics, and computer screens for extended periods
- Ability to use hands and fingers for typing, data entry, reporting, presentations, and standard office tasks
- Ability to occasionally stand, walk, bend, reach, and move throughout office, customer site, supplier site, or factory floor environments as needed
- Ability to occasionally travel domestically as needed
- Ability to work in office and factory floor environments while following applicable safety procedures
- Ability to wear required protective equipment in designated areas as needed
Salary Range: $100,000 to $150,000/year + discretionary bonus, profit sharing, and potential equity
