Armed and Prohibited Persons Unit Supervisor I
Job Description and Duties
Under the general direction of the Supervisor (Sup) II, the Armed and Prohibited Persons Unit Supervisor I is the section manager over analytical, technical, and clerical staff for the Armed and Prohibited Persons Unit (APPU). The APPU Section completes firearms eligibility background checks and notifies interested agencies when an applicant becomes prohibited from owning/possessing firearms and ammunition. The Armed and Prohibited Persons Unit Supervisor I is responsible for the following:
- Planning, management, and control of the APPU process, which includes both automated and manual processing of prohibited persons; processing individual firearms reports; processing no longer in possession document submissions; development of detailed case files and liaison for bureau enforcement staff concerning armed and prohibited individuals, as well as, state and federal firearms laws; maintains section statistics and workload data; develops special reports regarding armed and prohibited persons.
- Ensuring quality assurance measures are adhered to, and conducting quality assurance reviews.
- Direct supervision over Crime Analyst Supervisors (CAS) and their subordinate staff and one Crime Analyst II; duties include training, mentoring, monitoring, and evaluating staff; responding to issues requiring progressive discipline and administering department policy as it relates to FMLA, Injury Illness Prevention, Workplace Harassment/Discrimination and Non-Retaliation.
- Analyzing APPU information technology needs, and interfacing functionalities required. This includes analyzing and developing detailed system change requests.
- Advising and making recommendations to upper management on state, federal, and local laws policies and plans which affect DOJ, law enforcement, and the firearms industry.

Working Conditions
DOJ has adopted teleworking for employees who can effectively perform their essential work functions remotely. This position currently has no telework available. However, this position may allow for some telework opportunities in the future.

Desirable Qualifications
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Knowledge of: the various databases applicable to Crime Analyst work; relevant policies and procedures; the various terminology and acronyms used in Crime Analyst work; elements of the criminal intelligence cycle to be able to identify and describe the formalized steps of this process; and state and federal regulations, state codes, and policies as they pertain to the functions of criminal investigation.
Ability to: work independently to meet deadlines with minimal supervision; work productively as a member of a team; select important elements contained within reports; extract data from detailed documents; establish and maintain files and databases; apply general rules to specific problems to form logical conclusions; identify missing items in a thread of information to establish a need for further investigation; visually present results of investigative efforts through a variety of software tools; identify complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions; break complex data down into organized and useful sections of information; and gather sources of information to be used in identifying trends of making conclusions.

Statement of Qualifications
