Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA)
The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) provides treatment to patients under the direction of the Occupational Therapist, following physician orders and individual treatment plans. This role supports interdisciplinary communication, patient documentation, caregiver training, and the maintenance of therapy equipment and space.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Administer treatment to patients as directed by the Occupational Therapist and in accordance with the physician's treatment plan.
- Record accurate and timely daily treatment notes, weekly progress notes, and other documentation as required by the State Occupational Therapy Practice Act and third-party payers.
- Participate in discharge planning and instruct patients, family members, and nursing staff in maintenance programs and caregiver education prior to discharge.
- Communicate with the Occupational Therapist, supervisor, and interdisciplinary team members regarding patient progress, concerns, and treatment plans.
- Support the nursing department in the training and oversight of Restorative Aides.
- Participate in in-service education and training programs for facility staff.
- Document treatment modifications, recertification notes, and patient progress per facility policy and applicable regulations.
- Assist in maintaining a clean, safe, and organized treatment area; report any equipment issues to ensure proper functionality.
- Maintain a professional and positive relationship with patients, families, staff, and healthcare colleagues.
Qualifications: Education and Experience:
- Licensed Occupational Therapy Assistant in good standing with the State Board.
- Experience using therapy documentation software such as Casamba and PointClickCare is preferred.
- Must maintain a current Occupational Therapy Assistant license as required by state law.
- Must meet ongoing continuing education requirements per state practice standards.
- Ability to read and understand technical procedures, policy manuals, and regulatory documentation.
- Capable of effectively communicating with managers, coworkers, and family members.
- Ability to apply basic math concepts, including fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions in practical settings.
- Ability to solve problems and interpret instructions delivered in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
