Air Resources Engineer
Job Description and Duties
This position is a 12-month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.
The Engine Testing Section (ETS) of the Mobile Source Laboratory Division is seeking a dynamic and creative staff member to fill an exciting limited term position as an Air Resources Engineer in the state-of-the-art new engine testing laboratory. The position will be responsible for conducting technically complex emissions testing and research programs. Duties involve preparing, installing, and conducting heavy-duty on- and off-road engine and powerpack exhaust emissions testing on engine dynamometers. Additional responsibilities will include conceptualizing emissions testing projects; developing test plans; procuring and maintaining test cell resources; preparing advanced emissions measurement systems; performing equipment Quality Assurance/Quality Control (also known as QA/QC); performing data analysis; and preparing summary reports and presentations.

Working Conditions
This position is not currently eligible for telework. The incumbent will be required to report to the position’s designated headquarters location, as indicated on their duty statement, at their own expense.
Effective July 1, 2025, the California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025). PLP 2025 directs that each employee shall receive a 3 percent reduction in pay in exchange for 5 hours PLP 2025 leave credits, monthly. The salary range(s) included in the job advertisement do not reflect the 3 percent reduction in pay.- Requires being stationary, consistent with office work, for extended periods.

Desirable Qualifications
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
The most competitive qualifications include strong technical experience and the ability to plan and conduct engine test programs and analyze and summarize data. The candidate must have knowledge of internal combustion engines, emissions measurement systems, and laboratory procedures. The candidate should have strong written and verbal communication skills; must be able to work independently and as part of a team; should have interpersonal skills to work effectively with other divisions, industry, and government agencies; and display enthusiasm and initiative. Demonstrated hands-on experience with engine testing, transmission testing, hardware-in-the-loop simulation, and exhaust emissions measurement systems are highly desirable.

Experience and Education
