THE DEPARTMENT OF BUILDING & SAFETY
The mission of the Department of Building and Safety is to protect the lives and safety of the residents and visitors of the City of Los Angeles and enhance the quality of life, housing, economic prosperity, and job creation citywide. Through a timely, cooperative, and transparent process, the Department advises, guides, and assists customers to achieve conformity with the Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, Electrical, Disabled Access, Energy, and Green codes and local and State laws to build safe, well and fast.
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
The Deputy Superintendent of Building I position will serve as the Inspection Bureau (IB) Chief and direct the activities of over 400 employees. This position is responsible for managing, planning, coordinating and directing through subordinate supervisors the technical and administrative activities of the IB, which is responsible for new construction, commercial, specialty, and residential inspection. The Bureau Chief is responsible for preparing and directing the preparation of a variety of technical reports and recommending bureau policies and solutions to problems. As directed by the General Manager, this position frequently communicates with the Office of the Mayor, City Council Offices, the City Attorney, other City Departments, outside agencies and organizations, inspection industry officials, business groups and the public.
QUALIFYING EXPERIENCE
Two years of full-time paid inspection management experience in a class at the level of Assistant Deputy Superintendent of Building with the City of Los Angeles or other governmental agency involved in inspection related functions. An active certification with the International Code Council (ICC) may substitute for 6 months of the qualifying experience.

- The ability to plan, organize, and direct the activities of staff responsible for technical and administrative activities of the Inspection Bureau.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
The current salary range for the Deputy Superintendent of Building I is $176,227 to $257,659 per year.

The position of Deputy Superintendent of Building I, Department of Building and Safety is an exempt, at-will management position. The incumbent will not accrue any civil service tenure, contractual employment rights or due process rights. The Deputy Superintendent of Building I is appointed by and serves at the pleasure of the General Manager, Department of Building and Safety. The incumbent may be removed, without any finding of cause by the General Manager, Department of Building and Safety. Such removal would not be reviewable or appealable.
