Under the close supervision of the Senior Industrial Hygienist with the Department of Industrial Relations (DIR), Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), Enforcement Branch, the Junior Industrial Hygienist is a trainee level position. The Junior Industrial Hygienist is responsible for performing the less complex industrial hygiene work in connection with occupational health hazards in places of employment throughout the State. The Junior Industrial Hygienist conducts the less complex health inspections, industrial hygiene monitoring of chemical, biological, and physical agents and assists Associate and Senior Industrial Hygienists in conducting complex surveys/sampling and inspections of occupational environments, and inspections of potential health hazards of specific substances or in specific industries or processes related to occupational health hazards. Junior Industrial Hygienists are to perform all work in accordance with DIR-DOSH policies, DOSH Compliance Policy and Procedure Manual, Directives, and Memorandums.

Working Conditions
This job is located at:
Division of Occupational Safety and Health
Enforcement Branch – Redding District Office
381 Hemsted Drive, Redding, CA 96002.
Some of this work will be in an office environment and at other times the work will be at a field site that has the potential for exposures to safety and hazardous substances, and may involve, including but not limited to:
Working outdoors 8 hours or more per day in a wide range of weather conditions (e.g. rain, strong winds, heat, and cold); Sitting at a desk, in a chair, and using a computer and/or laptop; Using a multi-line telephone console or a cordless telephone with headset or cell phone; Traveling via private, State vehicle, or public transportation (i.e. automobile, airplane, etc.) including overnight travel inside California may be required.
Additionally this position may participate in emergency operations in the capacity of area teams, field inspection, coordination, and assist agencies such as CalOES and FEMA in disaster work, including performing fieldwork to complete damage survey reports for droughts, flooding, earthquakes, and other emergencies. This position may also serve in one of the sections as established in the Incident Command System to assist the Department in performing its emergency preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation functions. These functions are established in the California State Emergency Plan and the Department’s Administrative Orders.
Desirable Qualifications
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Basic principles of industrial hygiene, environmental health and State laws, rules and regulations on the health of industrial workers; Basic concepts of apparatus used to monitor and/or collect samples of substances for analysis; Use of industrial hygiene sampling; Writing, note-taking and using computers; Identifying potential health risks and hazards within the workplace; Developing sampling strategies; Communicating elements of industrial hygiene and health hazards to technical and non-technical personnel; Preparing written reports incorporating findings, risk assessments, and recommended corrective actions; Observing worksite procedures and interviewing employees to gather information on operations, material used, and equipment that may result in illness, impairment, injury, or impact on the health of employees; Conducting workplace environment analyses with the use of calibrated equipment; collecting data by recognized sampling techniques; preparing and sending filter samples for laboratory analysis; Reviewing laboratory results; summarizing the details of each inspections; preparing narrative reports; researching related regulations and other applicable codes; Conducting workplace environment analyses with the use of calibrated equipment; collecting data by recognized sampling techniques; preparing and sending filter samples for laboratory analysis; Reviewing laboratory results; summarizing the details of each inspections; preparing narrative reports; researching related regulations and other applicable codes; Observing worksite procedures; Analyze situations accurately, derive recommendations and take effective action; Establish and maintain cooperative relations with those contacted in the course of the work; Communicate effectively; Prepare clear and concise reports; possession of a valid California Driver’s License and Car insurance.
