Regional RN Inspector
Job Description and Duties
Please Note: Effective July 1, 2025, the State of California implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) which reduces an employee’s monthly salary in exchange for leave credits. Employees appointed to this classification will have their monthly salary reduced by 3% and will accrue 5 hours of PLP 2025 on the first day of each pay period. PLP 2025 for this classification is expected to be effective through June 2027.
Under the general direction of the Supervising Registered Nurse II (SRN II) of the Medical Inspection Unit (MIU), who is located at headquarters (HQ) in Sacramento, the incumbent will work primarily on the compliance component of the Office of the Inspector General’s (OIG) medical inspection program. Working with a team of physicians, Nursing Consultants, Program Review (NCPRs), Deputy, Analysts, and other Registered Nurses, Correctional Facility (RNs), the incumbent will serve as a technical expert evaluating the provision of medical care in adult correctional institutions operated by the California Correctional Health Care Services (CCHCS)/Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) and conduct onsite medical inspections at CDCR institutions within his or her assigned regional location. From the assigned OIG regional office location, the incumbent will document inspection testing results and draft written summaries of those results for the OIG’s public medical inspection reports. The incumbent will assess each assigned institution’s delivery of medical care based on its compliance with certain CCHCS policies and procedures and identified professional standards and guidelines in accordance with the OIG’s medical inspection compliance tool and methodologies. During inspections, the incumbent will provide medical expertise to other team members and travel to correctional institutions, OIG regional offices, and other locations as necessary.The designated Headquarters (HQ) for this position is in Sacramento, and the selected candidate will be required to commute to their HQ office location as needed to meet operational needs. All commute expenses to the HQ location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

Desirable Qualifications
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
- Correctional nursing experience or other nursing experience providing direct patient care.
- Nursing audit experience with chart review in the community or correctional setting.
- Experience with analyzing and developing health care policies and procedures.
- Experience with CCHCS electronic health record system (EHRS) (e.g. CERNER) or other electronic health record systems.
- Experience with computer systems and applications in a health care setting.
- Willingness to travel to all California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitations institutions to conduct onsite portion of medical inspections.
