Staff Software Engineer
About the role:
As a Staff Software Engineer on our Inspection & Mapping team, you will build and improve the geospatial and mission-planning systems that power our autonomous drones. Your work will enable our industrial, enterprise and government customers to plan advanced aerial missions, visualize complex spatial data, and seamlessly integrate autonomous operations into their workflows. You’ll collaborate with Autonomy, Backend Infrastructure and Product teams to create robust, scalable, and intuitive systems.
How you’ll make an impact:
- Develop full-stack solutions using React, TypeScript, Python and modern frameworks delivering robust backend services and intuitive frontend interfaces
- Build and maintain secure, scalable APIs, services and integrations for handling large datasets and powering enterprise-grade drone operations
- Integrate geospatial capabilities using Mapbox and other APIs with autonomy systems and AWS cloud infrastructure for high performance and reliability
- Work alongside Autonomy engineers, and collaborate with Product, Design and Field teams to rapidly iterate, integrate feedback, and deliver new capabilities
- Contribute to code reviews, architectural decisions, and proof-of-concepts, upholding high engineering standards
What would make you a good fit:
- 8+ years building full stack systems; proficiency in TypeScript, React, GraphQL, Python and AWS
- Systems Thinking: Capable of designing end-to-end solutions with performance, testing, and observability in mind
- Experience with Mapbox APIs OR hands-on geospatial knowledge (PostGIS, ArcGIS, QGIS) OR data visualization skills is a huge plus
- Mission Planning & Robotics: Familiarity with decision-making architectures for autonomous operations such as state-machine or behavior-trees is a big plus
Bonus points for:
- Experience working with geospatial data visualization (Mapbox, Cesium, or similar).
- Familiarity with photogrammetry, scanning, mapping, or rendering pipelines.
- Experience integrating frontend with cloud-based services (AWS, Temporal, Kubernetes).
- Exposure to autonomy or robotics platforms.
Compensation: At Skydio, our compensation packages for regular, full-time employees include competitive base salaries, equity in the form of stock options, and comprehensive benefits packages. Compensation will vary based on factors, including skill level, proficiencies, transferable knowledge, and experience. Relocation assistance may also be provided for eligible roles. The annual base salary range for this position is $200,000-$265,000.
