Machine learning manager

Cash App
California

Block is one company built from many blocks, all united by the same purpose of economic empowerment. The blocks that form our foundational teams — People, Finance, Counsel, Hardware, Information Security, Platform Infrastructure Engineering, and more — provide support and guidance at the corporate level. They work across business groups and around the globe, spanning time zones and disciplines to develop inclusive People policies, forecast finances, give legal counsel, safeguard systems, nurture new initiatives, and more. Every challenge creates possibilities, and we need different perspectives to see them all. Bring yours to Block.

The Role

We're looking for an Engineering Manager to lead the Applied Machine Learning team for Cash App within Block's Advanced Insights & Modeling (AIM) organization. This team combines cutting-edge AI, machine learning, and emerging agentic systems to build models that learn, reason, and act. We experiment with traditional ML, autonomous AI workflows, GraphRAG architectures, and multi-agent systems to push the boundaries of predictive intelligence and decision automation. You'll lead a team of machine learning experts to shape how Cash App uses AI to anticipate trends, make smarter decisions, and deliver magical user experiences.

As a player-coach, you'll guide an experienced group of applied ML engineers and modelers while staying deeply connected to the technology. You'll own execution across the full ML lifecycle, foster collaboration with executive team members, and help define how Cash App applies AI to deliver trustworthy, explainable, and actionable insights.

We're looking for a leader who blends technical depth, business intuition, and a passion for building scalable, transparent ML systems that empower decision-makers; In partnership with the Guidance organization, you'll bring automation, interpretability, and strategic foresight to forecasting and business planning—building the AI systems and tools that help teams across Cash App see what's coming next and act on it with confidence.

You Will

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of applied ML engineers and modelers focused on forecasting and GTM models.
  • Build AI-driven tools and interfaces that make models explainable and accessible for decision makers in Finance, Marketing, and Product.
  • Collaborate across Finance, Sales, Marketing, and other go-to-market teams to refine growth strategies and support critical investment decisions with data-driven insights.
  • Establish strong engineering practices across model development, evaluation, deployment, and monitoring.
  • Apply both classical ML techniques (e.g., XGBoost, linear models) and modern Gen-AI tools to build end-to-end ML solutions that power Block's decision making engine.
  • Foster a team culture grounded in curiosity and measurable impact.

You Have

  • 8+ years of experience in software or ML engineering, including 2+ years of technical leadership or people management experience.
  • Degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Economics, Data Science, Physics or a related technical field.
  • Experience delivering production-grade ML systems—preferably in forecasting, revenue, or growth modeling.
  • Experience with end-to-end ML systems, from data pipelines and model training to deployment and monitoring.
  • Experience building or integrating explainable AI tools (e.g., feature attribution, interpretability frameworks, visualization systems).
  • A passion for mentoring, learning, and building cohesive teams.
  • Experience with agentic AI concepts and tools for workflow automation (e.g., MCP).
  • [Bonus] Experience in forecasting, planning, or financial modeling within fintech, consumer, or marketplace domains.
