Delivering Solutions for a Safe Community The Department of Resource Management is a comprehensive agency comprised of the Public Works, Building and Safety, Planning Services, Environmental Health Services, Parks, and Administrative Services Divisions. The department provides for the well-being of Solano County's present and future residents and the public at-large through administration and enforcement of Federal, State, and Local laws and policies pertaining to transportation, building construction, land use planning environmental health, and recreation. The Public Works Operations Division maintains roadways, shoulders, signs, drainage ditches, culverts, bridges and vegetation within County right of way. The division also maintains roads, parking lots, and drainage facilities for other agencies on a reimbursable basis, including drainage channels maintained under contract with the Solano County Water Agency. The current vacancies are for Full-time & Extra-help Seasonal positions The Public Works Trainee is an entry level position assigned to Roads, Traffic Maintenance, or Flood Control within the Public Works division. As a Public Works Trainee, you will learn the work methods and techniques needed to perform tasks related to construction, repair, and maintenance of roads, flood control channels, roadside drainage, bridges, and traffic markings and signs. Job tasks include: grounds keeping along roads, assisting in pavement removal and replacement, installing road signs, repairing guardrails, and operator maintenance. The eligible list created as a result of this recruitment will be used to fill full-time and part-time regular, limited-term or extra-help positions as vacancies occur throughout the County. POSITION REQUIREMENTS Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent. Experience: Three (3) months of full-time work experience in construction trades. Licensing, Certification and Registration Requirements: Applicants are required to possess a valid California Driver's License, Class C. Note: The driver's license must be kept current while employed in this class. A Hazmat certification may be required. Public Works Trainee Selection Process 03/20/25 - Deadline to submit application and required documents. Week of 3/31/25 - Tentative dates for online written exam. Based on the information provided in the application documents, the qualified applicants may be invited for further examination and will either be pre-scheduled by the Department of Human Resources or be invited to self-schedule. All applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. Depending upon the number of applications received, the selection process may consist of an initial application screening, a mandatory information meeting, a supplemental questionnaire assessment, a written and/or practical exam, an oral board exam, or any combination listed. Responses to supplemental questions may be used as screening and testing mechanisms and will be used to assess an applicant's ability to advance in the process; as such, responses to supplemental questions should be treated as test examination responses.
