Assistant Professor of Microbiology & Immunology

Stanf. Univ
Stanford, CA

The Department of Microbiology & Immunology at Stanford University seeks applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the University Tenure Line. We seek outstanding scientist with a doctoral degree whose research addresses fundamental and emerging questions in broadly defined areas of microbiology and/or immunology.

We welcome applications spanning the full breadth of these fields. Areas of particular interest include, but are not limited to, microbial pathogenesis and symbiosis, hostmicrobe interactions, and immune responses. We are especially interested in candidates who bring innovative molecular, genomic, systems-level computational, quantitative or theoretical approaches to important biological questions.

Our goal is to recruit creative and collaborative scientists who will establish innovative, independent research programs and contribute to the intellectual breadth and future directions of the department. Candidates whose research extends beyond areas highlighted above are strongly encouraged to apply.

The predominant criterion for appointment in the University Tenure Line are major commitments to research and teaching.

Individuals appointed as Assistant Professors in the UTL will have completed housestaff training (where applicable) and, additionally, one or two years of postdoctoral research experience. Their accomplishments during graduate and postgraduate training should already have stamped them as creative and promising investigators. If these individuals have not had formal teaching experience, they should have demonstrated during their postdoctoral training a commitment to develop the skills necessary for first-rate teaching. In short, the successful candidate must have demonstrated true distinction (or the promise of achieving true distinction) in research, and the capability of sustaining first-rate performance (or the promise of this) in teaching, and excellence in patient care (if applicable) appropriate to the programmatic need upon which the appointment is based.

We expect the successful candidate to establish a thriving research program that pursues creative, cutting-edge, foundational research at the forefront of microbiology and/or immunology. The faculty member will foster a supportive environment for training the next generation of scientists and leaders. Responsibilities will include teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate, postbaccalaureate, graduate, and post-doctoral levels and contributing to a collaborative, inclusive and respectful community.

The Department of Microbiology & Immunology is a vibrant community of over 200 individuals, including 16 primary and 24 secondary faculty. Our laboratories are highly interactive, with research spanning bacteria and bacterial pathogenesis, the microbiome and symbiosis, protists, viruses & phages and the host and immune system. Many research groups work across these areas, creating opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and discovery. Faculty employ a broad range of experimental, computational, and theoretical approaches and participate extensively in interdisciplinary research across Stanford, including university-wide research initiatives, such Stanford Bio-X, ChEM-H, and the Chan-Zuckerberg Biohub.

Stanford is an equal employment opportunity and affirmative action employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. Stanford welcomes applications from all who would bring additional dimensions to the University’s research, teaching and clinical missions.

Consistent with its obligations under the law, the University will provide reasonable accommodations to applicants and employees with disabilities. Applicants requiring a reasonable accommodation for any part of the application or hiring process should contact [email protected].

The university’s central functions of research and education depend on freedom of thought, and expression. The Department of Microbiology & Immunology, School of Medicine, and Stanford University value faculty who will help foster an open and respectful academic environment for colleagues, students, and staff with a wide range of backgrounds, identities, and perspectives. Candidates may choose to include as part of their research and teaching statements a brief discussion about how their work and experience will further these values.

Please submit the following to

  • A curriculum vitae
  • A three-page description of research accomplishments and future plans
  • A statement of teaching interests
  • Three names of references for letters of recommendation

Applications will be reviewed beginning November 2nd, 2026, and accepted until the position is filled.

The expected base pay range for this position is: $196,000- $214,000

This pay range reflects base pay, which is based on faculty rank and years in rank. It does not include all components of the School of Medicine’s faculty compensation program or pay from participation in departmental incentive compensation programs.
