Finance Manager – Cannabis Manufacturing
Position Summary
The Finance Manager is responsible for planning, directing, and overseeing all financial activities of the cannabis manufacturing operation. This position ensures accurate financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, cost accounting, inventory valuation, and regulatory compliance. The Finance Manager partners with operations, manufacturing, sales, and executive leadership to maximize profitability while ensuring compliance with state and federal financial regulations, GAAP, and cannabis-specific reporting requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Financial Management
- Manage the day-to-day financial operations of the manufacturing facility.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Develop annual operating budgets and financial forecasts.
- Monitor organizational cash flow and working capital requirements.
- Analyze financial performance and recommend strategies to improve profitability.
- Prepare financial reports and presentations for executive leadership.
- Oversee banking relationships and treasury functions.
Accounting & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Oversee month-end and year-end closing processes.
- Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger activities.
- Coordinate annual financial audits and tax preparation.
- Maintain strong internal controls and financial policies.
- Ensure compliance with state and local cannabis financial regulations.
- Assist with regulatory reporting and financial documentation required by cannabis licensing agencies.
Cost Accounting & Manufacturing
- Develop and maintain standard costing methodologies.
- Analyze manufacturing costs, labor utilization, and production efficiencies.
- Monitor inventory valuation, cost of goods sold (COGS), and gross margins.
- Partner with production managers to identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Review inventory reconciliations and manufacturing variances.
- Ensure accurate financial tracking of raw materials, work-in-process, and finished goods.
Inventory & Cannabis Compliance
- Ensure financial reconciliation between accounting records and cannabis track-and-trace systems (such as METRC).
- Monitor inventory controls to reduce shrinkage and maintain compliance.
- Assist with physical inventory counts and cycle counts.
- Ensure proper valuation of cannabis inventory in accordance with accounting standards.
Budgeting & Analysis
- Prepare financial models and forecasts.
- Analyze operational trends and key performance indicators.
- Evaluate capital expenditures and investment opportunities.
- Provide financial analysis supporting strategic decision-making.
Leadership
- Supervise accounting and finance personnel.
- Develop departmental procedures and internal controls.
- Mentor staff and promote continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with department managers to improve financial performance.
Additional Responsibilities
- Maintain confidentiality of financial and proprietary information.
- Participate in management meetings.
- Complete special financial projects as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field required preferred.
Experience
- Five (5) or more years of progressive accounting or finance experience.
- Three (3) years of management or supervisory experience preferred.
- Manufacturing accounting experience required.
- Cannabis industry experience strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of GAAP.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing cost accounting.
- Knowledge of inventory management and valuation.
- Familiarity with cannabis regulations, licensing requirements, and METRC or other seed-to-sale tracking systems.
- Experience with ERP and accounting software.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Strong analytical and financial modeling abilities.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to interpret complex financial information and communicate findings effectively.
- Strong leadership, coaching, and team development skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Ability to occasionally walk through manufacturing and warehouse environments.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
