Job Description and Duties

The Litigation Paralegal is responsible for performing high-level paralegal support to attorneys in the Office of Legislative Counsel's (OLC's) Legislative Services Branch (LSB). This includes but is not limited to providing advanced litigation support to legal staff for litigation matters; preparing and filing all manner of trial court pleadings, motions, discovery, and appellate court briefs; independently reviewing and analyzing documents; researching and analyzing court rules and provisions of the Code of Civil Procedure to determine and make recommendations to attorneys regarding filing requirements and deadlines; and effecting service of pleadings and other documents. The Paralegal also reviews, analyzes, and evaluates requests for records submitted under the Legislative Open Records Act (LORA) and the California Public Records Act (CPRA), and conducts other complex legal and legislative research, independently or under oversight from attorneys performs special projects as assigned.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Knowledge of court and administrative agency practices and procedures; basic legal concepts, terminology, principles, and procedures; the obligation to protect confidential or privileged information from disclosure (e.g., the attorney-client privilege); and the use of legal reference materials.
  • Ability to read and understand statutes, court decisions, legal documents, and similar material; efficiently conduct legal research (including thro ugh use of online resources), and prepare documents setting forth a statement of the facts, applications of the relevant law, and conclusions; write effectively and efficiently produce work product (e.g., memoranda, reports, deposition summaries, legal documents), sometimes under tight deadlines; efficiently conduct public record and internet research; and manage cases, documents, and evidence, including cases with voluminous documents.
  • Ability to reason logically, analyze situations accurately, and recommend an effective course of action; communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing; efficiently manage a challenging workload by prioritizing tasks and handling several tasks and deadlines simultaneously; and exercise good judgment and work collaboratively, professionally, and ethically with co-workers, other colleagues, supervisors, managers, administrative staff, clients, opposing counsel, court staff, public officials, and representatives of public agencies.
