Lead Lasercom Systems Engineer
Lead Systems Engineer – Laser Communications (Space-Based Payload)
Preferred Locations: San Diego, California
U.S. Citizenship Required | Security Clearance Preferred (or must be eligible)
Full-Time | Permanent Role
Very Competitive Salary
The Opportunity
We’re working with an established leader in the space sector to find a Lead Systems Engineer with strong experience in laser communications (lasercom) . You’ll be joining a small, capable team tasked with delivering a brand-new optical communications terminal for a major U.S. government program.
This is a high-impact role – you’ll be helping drive a technically complex system from concept through delivery, shaping how the hardware comes together and keeping key partners on track. If you’re looking for a role where your work really matters and isn’t buried in layers of process, this is one worth a serious look.
What You’ll Be Doing
Taking the lead on systems engineering for a next-gen space-based lasercom terminal.
Managing a key subcontractor delivering the Optical Head Assembly – holding them accountable for timelines, technical quality, and documentation.
Leading the definition and analysis of requirements – including traceability and compliance across the entire system.
Creating and managing Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and system integration efforts.
Preparing for and leading technical reviews like CDRs , and building associated test plans and evaluation processes.
Working closely with in-house subject matter experts across optics, software, hardware, and operations to keep development moving.
Contributing to a system that will support not just this mission, but future government and commercial payloads as well.
What They’re Looking For
A seasoned systems engineer with hands-on experience delivering complex, space-based systems – especially in optical communications .
You’ve led large technical reviews, created ICDs, overseen requirements databases, and held subcontractors to a high standard.
Comfortable working mostly at the system level (80-90%), but happy to step into technical detail when needed.
Confident working independently, prioritizing tasks, and solving problems without needing constant direction.
You present well to both internal teams and external partners – whether you’re explaining technical tradeoffs or defending requirements.
You’re collaborative, enjoy being part of a tight team, and understand the impact of team dynamics.
Preferably cleared (or clearable), and eligible to work in the U.S.
Why This Role Stands Out
You’ll be a key player on a brand-new payload – shaping decisions from day one.
The system will support a high-profile mission with real-world impact, and will likely be reused or expanded across multiple future projects.
You’ll join a small, capable, and motivated team that actually enjoys working together.
The company has multiple payloads in development, including space-based and terrestrial lasercom – offering variety and growth.
Offices with existing teams are in San Diego, Phoenix, and Cleveland , but they’re open to flexible setups for the right person.
Details & Requirements
U.S. Citizenship is required
Must be eligible for security clearance
Ideally based in or near Carlsbad, Phoenix, or Cleveland – but open to remote or hybrid for top talent
Salary is flexible and open depending on your background and experience
If you’re a systems engineer with lasercom experience and want to lead on something meaningful, we’d love to hear from you.
