Instituto Familiar de la Raza, Inc. is a multi-service community health and social service agency with emphasis in serving the Chicanx/Latinx/Indígenx community in San Francisco. Services include a wide range of mental health and behavioral health, HIV-related services, and social services including health promotion, education, prevention, early intervention, case management, support groups, cultural interventions, and social and spiritual engagement. IFR serves children, youth, adults and families, and multiple subpopulations, including youth, the Indígena, and LGBTQ+ youth and adults. The organization has a rich history of working collaboratively with other agencies to meet the needs of the Chicanx/Latinx/Indígenx community and other cultural/racial communities in San Francisco.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Director of Development and Strategic Communications is part of a dynamic and enthusiastic three-person team charged with guiding the organization toward a sustainable future by developing and executing strategies that align organizational objectives with effective fund development, revenue generating, and communication strategies. The position is primarily on-site, with the flexibility of working remotely.

The position reports to and works closely with the Executive Director (ED) across the full IFR team and Board to promote an organizational culture of philanthropy. Under the direction of the Executive Director, and as a member of IFR's Concilio Executive Team, this position is an active collaborative partner with agency leadership in visioning, leading, and implementing IFR's mission and strategic goals, plans and objectives. The person in this position also participates in strategic planning for IFR and identifies opportunities for growth, innovation, and partnerships to advance the organization's strategic objectives and enhance the organization's visibility and brand image.

The position supervises a dynamic Development/Communications team that includes the Development Manager and Communications Specialist. The Director of Development and Strategic Communications works closely with the Development Manager to manage and execute IFR's annual fund development plan to achieve the outlined annual revenue/fundraising goals.

In managing the communications for the agency, the position works with the Communications Specialist to develop an annual internal and external communications plan across multiple platforms to elevate the agency's visibility in the community, generate interest in the organization and its programs, and raise awareness of issues impacting IFR's clients and community. The Director of Development and Strategic Communications also manages media relations for IFR.

This position is both strategic and tactical, as it is responsible for oversight and execution of IFR's annual development and communication plans. The ideal candidate is an energetic, passionate, and visionary individual with a strong commitment to addressing the needs of the Latinx community in San Francisco. They are a prolific multitasker and strategic thinker who can effectively convey complex topics verbally and in writing. The ideal candidate will also have an interest and understanding of public health, health disparities, equity, cultural competency and related issues impacting the Chicanx/Latinx/Indígenx communities of San Francisco.

Essential Job Duties are:

Leadership and Strategy:

  • Contribute positively to organizational culture and reflect IFR's values
  • Actively engage with IFR staff and members to truly understand IFR's mission, vision and development/communication priorities
  • Foster relationships with the Board of Directors, staff, and cross-departmentally to enhance organizational visibility, promote a culture of philanthropy, and capitalize on organizational priorities and assets.
  • Participate in strategic planning for IFR to ensure fund development and communication plans align with and are in service of evolving organizational goals
  • Actively engage with Executive Director, Concilio, and Program Directors to identify funding needs and resource generating opportunities
  • Manage and oversee the execution of IFR's development and communication plans to achieve annual agency strategic goals, including new ideas, industry best practices, and data-driven analysis
  • Supervise the Development Manager and Communications Specialist, including overseeing and supporting their training, skills development, and annual reviews
  • Develop and responsibly track annual budget for the Development/Communications team
  • Provide development and communication updates to IFR's Executive Director, Board of Directors, and other stakeholders as needed
  • Remain up-to-date and equipped to speak about the populations/communities served by IFR, their challenges and needs, and IFR's various supports, interventions, and programs and services from both a Communications and Development perspective.

Fund Development:

  • Responsible for leading and coordinating a collaborative grant writing process with program directors/departmental directors for all IFR government and foundation grants, ensuring alignment with organizational goals, and overseeing the submission process in collaboration with senior leadership. Approximately 1 to 2 grants a month.
  • Supervise Development Manager to successfully execute IFR's development and stewardship plans to raise unrestricted funds
  • Work with and mentor Development Manager to ensure development campaigns, appeals, events, and other development strategies are successfully coordinated and well-executed
  • Manage and lead the Development Manager providing guidance, training, and support, including goals and expectations, monitoring performance, creating opportunities for professional development, and providing feedback to ensure that fundraising goals are met
  • Actively engage with Executive Director, Concilio, and Program Directors to identify funding needs and resource generating opportunities
  • Network, engage and cultivate relationships with foundation officers, current and major donors, donor prospects, elected and appointed officials, service providers, and community residents as appropriate to foster positive relationships and raise awareness of IFR's community work
  • Remain up-to-date and equipped to speak about the populations/communities served by IFR, their challenges and needs, and IFR's various supports, interventions, and programs and services
  • Prepare reports for philanthropic funds and other grants management requirements as needed
  • Oversee the Development Manager's process of maintaining accurate, donor, and event records, acknowledgements and reporting requirements in IFR's Salesforce CRM
  • Annually update existing development and stewardship plans with fresh ideas to bring in new donors, best practices, and data-driven analysis.

Communications and Marketing:

  • Supervise the Communication Specialist in the development and content for organizational website, quarterly electronic newsletters, social media toolkits, brochures, annual report, email campaigns, and other external communications
  • Responsible for developing relevant media strategies for organizational activities, events, and issues; responding to or preparing appropriate staff to respond to media requests; and preparation and distribution of press releases, PSAs, OpEds, and other multimedia communications.
  • Oversee the Communications Specialist in the design and production of IFR's annual report, brochures, and other printed materials for programs, events and organizational needs and ongoing content development of IFR's social media, organizational website, electronic materials, blogs, and issue-based campaigns.
  • Oversee, review and update IFR's branding strategy annually
  • Review visual products for compliance with organization's brand and policies including appropriate uses of the agency logo and other external representations
  • Provide regular updates on program activities information on IFR website
  • Maintain the archival library of IFR photos for use in online and print publications

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • At least 8 years of experience working in nonprofit development, nonprofit grant writing experience including government grants with a track record of leading increases in revenue year-over-year. Experience working from, and preferably writing, a development and communication plan
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication
  • Experience managing and improving development operations
  • Engaging and thoughtful development, management, and supervision skills
  • Excellent multipurpose writing skills, such as grant writing, annual appeals, newsletters, and reports, across multiple platforms and audiences
  • Strong editing skills
  • Experience interfacing with government and foundation program officers, major donors and donor prospects, elected and appointed officials, service providers, and/or community residents
  • Working knowledge of program design and development, outcomes and evaluation
  • Ability to work independently and on teams to meet deadlines on a consistent basis
  • Organized and detail-oriented
  • Strong project management/time management skills and attention to deadlines
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, Excel) and Google. Salesforce and Adobe Creative Suite experience a plus
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks/projects, and meet deadlines promptly
  • An advocate for the Latinx community and their well-being and Knowledge of and sensitivity to issues of diversity
  • Experience in marketing, branding, and/or graphic design
  • Strong knowledge of contemporary issues impacting the Latino community locally and at-large
  • Experience in developing cohesive and compatible communications strategies across multiple platforms
  • Bicultural competence of Latinx Community, Bilingual Preferred

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

  • B.A./B.S. degree preferred
  • Must pass and maintain annual Tuberculosis Test (TB)
  • Must pass Department of Justice Fingerprint screening

COMPENSATION:

This is a full-time position with benefits; with a salary range is $115,000 - $125,000 depending on experience.
