Job Description and Duties

Performs routine work and general manual labor involved with such tasks as hatching, rearing and feeding of fish; including cleaning tanks, filters, strainers, and fish handling equipment. Maintains, cleans and makes basic repairs of hatchery building facilities and equipment. Assists with collecting fish samples and specimens, for collection of data by weighing, measuring, assessing health condition; netting, tagging and/or marking of fish. Keeps simple records; prepares simple draft reports; computes and enters data into fish databases. Also assists with administrative and organizational tasks such as filing, running errands, etc.

The Fish and Wildlife Seasonal Aid classification is a non-testing classification.

• Applicants who receive public assistance under the CalWORKs program shall be given hiring priority consideration as provided in Government Code, Section 19063.

• Applicants who receive public assistance need to identify themselves as CalWORKs recipients in the comments section of the STD 678, Examination/Employment Application.

• Applicants must submit verification of CalWORKs eligibility, which may include the most recent Notice of Action showing Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) eligibility or a copy of the most recent aid check stub.

• Applicants may obtain verification from the CalWORKs program. If CalWORKs verification is not submitted with the application, it will not be processed as CalWORKs eligible.

• Participation by a public assistance recipient is voluntary and in no event shall any person be subject to sanctions, through loss of benefits or eligibility, for not applying for, accepting, or continuing in a seasonal or entry level non-testing classification opening.

Working Conditions

Work will require some time in an office setting, but mostly outdoor work in all types of weather conditions. The selected candidate must be willing to work long hours in cold water, wet and rainy winter weather as well as hot summers. Hatchery work requires working with various chemicals for fish anesthetizing and for cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfection. There will be periods of heavier workload and lighter workload depending on fish needs and, as such, the number of hours will fluctuate similarly. Hours per month will typically be between 90-120. The position requires working some days of over 8 hours, and working weekends and holidays. Possession of a valid driver license.

Special Requirements

Demonstrated knowledge of, interest in, and aptitude for fish and wildlife conservation and repair and maintenance work; willingness to work unusual hours including some days over 8 hours, and weekends and holidays; willingness to perform varied manual tasks; willingness to work in adverse weather conditions; willingness to wear a prescribed uniform.


Special Physical Characteristics: Physical strength and agility; ability to lift 40 pounds; ability to swim 50 yards and stay afloat at least five (5) minutes.

This position requires possession of a valid Class C Driver's License. Must maintain a clean driving record. The selected candidate may be required to provide a photocopy (front and back) of the license: Name as stated on the license, issuing state, DL #, Class, expiration.

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Ability to work as part of a team and get along well with coworkers for achievement of a common goal. Experience in maintaining or repairing equipment. Willingness to learn new skills to improve abilities related to maintaining, repairing or replacing small engine equipment, pumps, ultraviolet treatment systems, plumbing, etc. Good driving record; additional coursework or experience in biological or environmental sciences; interest in and knowledge of fishing or studying fish; interest in a career in biology or fish and wildlife is also desirable.
