GI Technician - Riverside Med Center - Gastroenterology - Part Time (Riverside)

Job Summary:

Under direct supervision, provides functional guidance to assigned staff; incubates patients; analyzes collected specimens; and assists GI/Pulm physicians with endoscopic and bronchoscopic procedures.

Essential Responsibilities:

• Obtain patient specimens. Perform venipuncture and skin punctures to obtain blood samples. Perform tests and specimens for lab analysis. Perform routine diagnostic tests. Anesthetize patients with topical or aerosol medication.
• Assist physicians and medical staff with procedures, diagnostic examinations, and treatments. Assist in obtaining tissue specimens and biopsies. Assist with protocological procedures (e.g., sigmoid exams). Select and pass instruments.
• Record and chart patient data. Interview patients and collect patient data. Consult with physicians concerning test results and alert physicians to positive test results or test abnormalities. Report negative/positive specimens to physician.
• Explain test procedures and purposes. Analyze collected specimens for volume, acidity, or other standard measures. Assist in obtaining tissue specimens. Assist physicians in developing new techniques and procedures. Follow standard infection control procedures. Lift patients. Monitor and evaluate test readings during procedures. Observe, monitor, and evaluate patient condition during and after procedures. Prepare samples and specimens for lab analysis. Prepare and position patients for diagnostic tests and medical procedures. Respond to emergencies (e.g., Code Blue) and stat requests. Shave and apply antiseptic solutions to patient skin areas. Take and monitor patient vital signs. Transport patients to/from procedure area. Assist physician with fluoroscopic examinations and GI procedures (e.g., endoscopies/bronchoscopies). Assist with scope handling during GI procedures. Monitor IV solutions. Perform other procedures such as sclerotherapy, suctioning, X-ray, photographic documentation, balloon dilatation, blood specimen processing, CPR, culture preparation, cytology, minor surgeries, ovum and parasite examinations, and polypectomy.
• Prepare solutions and surgical tissue specimens. Centrifuge, filter, and separate specimens. Dilute specimens. Prepare control slides, clean procedure rooms and work areas. Handle specimens transfer to/from laboratories. Assemble and disassemble equipment and instruments.
• Ensure equipment availability and proper functioning for procedures. Adjust and check equipment during procedures. Prepare procedure and exam rooms. Set up and maintain sterile supplies and instruments. Decontaminate and inventory equipment. Notify for repairs. Maintain equipment in good condition, perform minor repairs, replace parts, and test equipment. Dispose of contaminated materials properly.
• Orient and train new or less experienced personnel. Attend training sessions. Serve as resource for procedural questions and problem solving. Answer phones, take messages, and perform other activities as directed. Uphold organizational policies and legal requirements. Provide excellent customer service with courtesy, compassion, and respect. Demonstrate skills aligned with patient age-specific needs.
• Promote and improve customer service to internal and external clients, aligning with organizational standards. Perform other duties as needed.

Basic Qualifications:

• Six (6) months recent (within past 3 years) experience in a GI/Pulmonary setting, with knowledge of GI procedures and equipment, demonstrating necessary skills and behaviors for superior, culturally sensitive service.

Education:

• If not experienced as a GI LVN, consideration may be given to trainees with at least 1 year recent LVN experience in acute/ambulatory care.

License, Certification, Registration:

• Vocational Nurse License (California)
• Basic Life Support
• I.V. Certification
