Principal Software Engineer

We offer merchants an end-to-end payments solution that provides authorization and settlement capabilities, as well as instant access to funds and payouts. We also help merchants connect with their customers, process exchanges and returns, and manage risk. You will translate business direction into \ndurable technical decisions, reduce systemic risk through proactive platform governance, and \nelevate engineering quality across the organization. \nYou will partner closely with stakeholders across roles and organizations to understand the \nbusiness requirements and ensure the platform is built with intention, while maintaining its \nreliability and compliance required by a leading financial services company. Your work will directly \naccelerate PayPal\u0027s ability to launch new markets, onboard new reward partners, and deliver \ndifferentiated consumer loyalty experiences. \n\n\nExpectations: \n\u2022 Define and own the platform architecture roadmap: Establish and maintain the technical \nvision for the Promotions Platform, domain boundaries, ownership models, integration \ncontracts, and API design.\n\n\u2022 Lead cross-team architectural governance: Drive architectural decision-making across five \nengineering teams, facilitating alignment on shared infrastructure, preventing domain \nboundary drift, and establishing clear patterns for campaign lifecycle. \n\u2022 Partner on platform-as-product strategy: Work alongside Technical Directors and Product \nleadership to define platform capabilities, engagement models, and intake processes that \nposition the Promotions Platform as a scalable internal product serving multiple business \nlines. \n\u2022 Establish engineering standards and resilience frameworks: Define and enforce standards \nfor observability, campaign governance, testing, and incident prevention\u2014translating \nlessons from past operational incidents into durable systemic improvements. \n\u2022 Influence cross-organizational technical strategy: Represent the Promotions Platform in \ncompany-wide architectural forums, advocating for platform needs while ensuring \nalignment with PayPal\u0027s broader technical ecosystem including risk, compliance, and \ndeveloper productivity platforms. \n\u2022 Drive architecture remediation and modernization: Define and execute a cohesive \narchitecture remediation strategy that systematically decouples legacy systems, reduces \nfragmentation across heterogeneous infrastructure stacks, and moves the platform toward \na unified, interoperable technology landscape. \n\u2022 Reduce friction in platform adoption: Lower the barrier to entry for engineering teams and \npartners consuming Promotions Platform capabilities by improving developer experience, \nstandardizing integration patterns, and providing clear self-service tooling, documentation, \nand engagement models. Measure and continuously improve the time-to-integrate for new \nconsumers of the platform, ensuring adoption is driven by the quality of the platform rather \nthan heroic tribal knowledge. \n\u2022 Mentor and grow technical talent: Serve as a technical role model and coach for staff and \nsenior engineers across the organization, elevating the overall architectural thinking and \nsystem design capabilities of the team. \n\n\nWhat You Bring: \n\u2022 Degree in Computer Science or a related technical field; advanced degree preferred. \n\u2022 15+ years of engineering experience, with a strong focus on building and scaling platform \ninfrastructure in high-availability, high-transaction-volume environments. \n\u2022 Deep expertise in distributed systems design, API architecture, event-driven systems, and \ndomain-driven design principles. \n\u2022 Proven ability to lead architectural governance across multiple engineering teams, \nestablishing shared standards without sacrificing team autonomy. \n\u2022 Strong track record of driving platform reliability improvements through observability, chaos \nengineering, incident prevention and management, and platform operationalization. \n\u2022 Ability and desire to navigate a high degree of technical and organizational complexity, \nambiguity, and conflicting constraints.\n\n\u2022 Excellent communication and executive presentation skills, with demonstrated ability to \nsynthesize complex technical decisions into clear recommendations for VP and SVP \naudiences. \n\u2022 Experience working in global, multi-market environments with an appreciation for the \ntechnical complexity of international product launches and compliance requirements. \n\u2022 Results-oriented and self-motivated, with a bias toward action and a record of delivering \narchitectural improvements that measurably accelerate engineering velocity and platform \nreliability.\n\nSubsidiary:\n\nHoney\n\nTravel Percent:\n\n0\n\n-\n\nThe base pay for this role will depend on where you work and the relevant experience and expertise you bring.
