AI Engineer (Mid-Senior Level)

Why This Role Matters

You'll join a small, high-impact team expanding Banyan's core platform with applied AI – including work in document parsing, data extraction, generative AI, and conversational interaction with complex financial and operational data. This is a foundational role and a rare chance to deeply shape and define how applied AI transforms the financing of sustainable infrastructure.

What you’ll do:

• Design and implement AI-powered services using modern paradigms like Model Context Protocol (MCP), Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), Reasoning and Acting (ReAct), and agentic frameworks to automate complex financial analysis and due diligence workflows.


• Develop secure, scalable, and maintainable APIs (primarily Python; Java experience also valued).


• Collaborate closely with the existing two-person AI pod to explore, prototype, and productize AI solutions.


• Integrate with LLM APIs (OpenAI, Gemini) and vector databases to enhance automation initiatives.


• Partner cross-functionally with Product, Customer Success, and Sales teams to identify opportunities for AI assistance and build AI expertise across the company.


• Advocate for and apply healthy coding practices and Agile methodologies.


• Participate actively in code reviews, pair programming, and knowledge development to implement new code and debug existing systems.


• Provide 2nd tier production support and proactively identify ways to improve our systems.


• Build financial and cleantech subject matter expertise and stay abreast of new AI technologies and industry trends to inform engineering decisions.

What you’ll need:

• Strong programming experience in Python or Java; comfort in learning the other.


• Demonstrated experience with LLMs, AI APIs, or applied ML workflows.


• Solid understanding of REST APIs, testing frameworks, and cloud deployment (AWS preferred).


• Provide thought leadership that challenges existing processes and delivers clear, structured decision-making frameworks to evaluate implementation tradeoffs.


• Curiosity , pragmatism, and ability to move from prototype to production.


• Clear communicator who enjoys solving problems collaboratively .


• Genuine enthusiasm for Banyan's mission and a willingness to help and mentor other team members.


• Bachelor's degree required.

Bonus skills:

• Experience with Postgres or other modern relational databases.


• Familiarity with Vue.js or modern front-end frameworks.


• Prior experience in financial services or FinTech .


• Exposure to data pipelines, document parsing, or retrieval systems.

Reporting & Location: This role reports to VP, Engineering and is a hybrid position based in our San Francisco office (3 days in office/2 remote).

Compensation: $180,000 - $215,000 base salary, commensurate with experience, and meaningful equity.
