T he California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) is seeking ambitious and self-motivated individuals that are ready to join our agency which funds over $60 billion of California’s budget. This position is in the Special Taxes and Fees Program, which manages a broad range of tax and fee programs. The position duties include leading, training and organizing a team that is responsible for analyzing and applying returns and payments associated with multiple tax programs. As the leader of the team, you will be responsible for reviewing the team’s completed work and advising on multiple complex problems. The Business Taxes Administrator I is responsible for:

  • Ensuring compliance of various tax and fees laws through team members resolving work items.
  • Participating in the development of compliance and audit procedures within the unit, performing special assignments.
  • Overseeing special functions such as performing quality assurance reviews or audits of completed team member’s work.
  • Supporting the branch’s desk audit functions through audit selection.
  • Being actively involved in creating and sustaining a great culture, developing annual goals, and working with peers and management to achieve them.
  • Performing other job-related duties, as required.

Working Conditions

  • Standard office environment.
  • Requires being in a stationary position, consistent with office work, for extended periods of time.
  • Daily use of a personal computer, office equipment, and/or telephone.
  • Depending on your work location, you may be working in a high-rise building.

Eligibility for Promotional Exams

In addition to meeting the Minimum Qualifications for the Business Taxes Administrator I , competition is limited to individuals who meet at least one of the following promotional examination criteria:

  • Have a permanent civil service appointment with CDTFA, or
  • Are current or former employees of the legislature for 2 or more years as defined in Government Code 18990, or
  • Are current or former non-elected exempt employees of the executive branch for 2 or more consecutive years as defined in Govt. Code 18992, or
  • Are persons retired from the United States military honorably discharged from active duty with a service disability or honorably discharged from active duty as defined in Government Code 18991. Applicants must provide a copy of discharge papers (DD 214) for verification purposes at the time of application.

Under certain circumstances other employees may be allowed to compete under provisions of Rules 234, 235 and 235.2. California Code of Regulations Rules 233, 234, 235.2 and 237 contain provisions regarding civil service status and eligibility for promotional examinations.
