Under the direction of the Information Technology Supervisor II, the Information Technology Specialist I serves as part of a team of Systems Administrators with independent responsibility for administering, coordinating, planning, and infrastructure upkeep and maintenance for the Jan Bashinski DNA Laboratory and the statewide DNA database, CAL-DNA. The State DNA database must coordinate with and provide data to the National DNA Index System (NDIS) on an ongoing basis through a Wide Area Network (WAN). Responsibilities include monitoring system performance, accumulation and analysis of information and problem definition and resolution; Active Directory (AD) and IT resource management and the development of statewide plans for databases which interface with local laboratories and the national system, NDIS.

Working Conditions

Performance of these duties requires the use of computers, infrastructure hardware, networks, databases, electronic mail (both internal and external), voicemail, and the Internet.

May occasionally work evening or weekend hours in response to system outages/recovery, maintenance, or upgrade activities.

Occasional statewide travel may be required to support field laboratory locations. Travel may require overnight stays, driving, and flying.

Note: This position may be eligible for hybrid telework under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the approval of the IT Supervisor II and program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position’s designated headquarters location, as indicated on their duty statement, at their own expense.

Special Requirements

• The position(s) requires that incumbents pass a Background Investigation prior to being hired. The Background Investigation may include Criminal Background and a review of any governmental records.
• A fingerprint check is required.

Ability to: Use initiative; act independently with flexibility and tact; use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems; perform technical analysis of proposed technology solutions; comprehend technical documents to interpret specifications, system implementations, capabilities, interdependencies, and compatibilities; serve as a technical liaison; develop and effectively utilize all available resources; develop end-user training materials; and gather data to perform statistical analysis and report outcomes.
