SENIOR ESTIMATOR
ABOUT LASAR
LASAR Underground Construction has been building telecommunications and utility infrastructure in the Central Valley for 30 years. We are an AT&T infrastructure partner since 2007 — the crew that gets called when the job is hard. Our clients include AT&T, CVIN, NextEra Energy, the California High Speed Rail Authority, and Con-Edison.
We build relationships, execute with discipline, and deliver results we're proud of.
Core Values: One Team | Safety & Care | Continuous Improvement | Craft & Pride
THE OPPORTUNITY
We are building out our estimating function, and this role sits at the center of that effort. The Senior Estimator is a senior-level position responsible for managing the full estimating process — from bid identification through award — and for helping build the team and systems that will support LASAR's continued growth.
This is not a back-office role. We want someone who has been in the field, understands what underground utility work actually costs, and can build competitive bids that reflect reality. You will work directly with leadership, interface with clients and prime contractors, and have a direct hand in shaping how LASAR approaches new work.
If you are looking for a senior seat with real scope and ownership, this is it.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Estimating & Bidding
- Own the end-to-end estimating process: bid identification, take-offs, pricing, HeavyBid entry, submission, and post-bid review
- Read and interpret plans, specifications, contracts, and technical documents to prepare accurate, competitive estimates
- Attend pre-bid meetings and site walks; gather field data on materials, labor, access, and local conditions
- Identify and quantify cost factors including production rates, equipment, subcontractors, and materials
- Maintain and update pricing, unit costs, and production benchmarks in HCSS HeavyBid
- Evaluate bid margins and profitability; support go/no-go decisions with leadership
- Track open bids and pursue profitable work aligned with LASAR's capabilities
Project Handoff & Field Coordination
- Lead project handoff meetings to transition awarded work to the execution team
- Assist in transferring bid data to HeavyJob for field cost tracking
- Conduct post-award site visits to validate production assumptions and margin performance
- Participate in project post-mortem reviews to continuously improve bid accuracy
Team & Pipeline Development
- Help build and mentor LASAR's estimating team as the function grows
- Develop and maintain a qualified subcontractor and supplier network
- Establish bid tracking processes and pipeline reporting for leadership
- Work directly with the COO and MD on long-range bid strategy and market positioning
WHAT YOU BRING
Required
- 7+ years of construction estimating experience, including direct experience in underground utility construction (telecommunications, broadband, conduit, substructure, fiber, or related work)
- Proficiency in HCSS HeavyBid — you have used it as your primary estimating tool
- Demonstrated ability to read blueprints, plans, specifications, and contract documents
- Working knowledge of city, county, and municipality standards and permitting requirements
- Strong mathematical and analytical skills; comfort with production-based estimating
- Valid California Class C Driver's License with a clean driving record
- Ability to travel to jobsites throughout the Central Valley and California as needed
Preferred
- Experience working within or alongside a structured estimating team at a utility contractor
- Familiarity with HCSS HeavyJob and field cost tracking
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field
- Experience with CPM scheduling (MS Project, P6, or equivalent)
- Familiarity with AT&T, telecom carrier, or public agency project requirements
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
You know what underground utility work costs because you have been close enough to see it. You are organized, methodical, and competitive. You want to win work — the right work, priced right. And you are ready to help build something, not just maintain it.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
We offer competitive compensation at the time of this job posting. Your pay will be determined based on experience, education, skills, and applicable knowledge. In addition to base salary, this role is commission eligible.
- Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance
- 401(k) with company match
- Commission on top of base salary
- Flexible Time-Off Policy
