Network Engineering Specialist

The Employment Development Department (EDD) is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Information Technology (IT) Specialist II to join the Network Engineering Group within the Information Technology Branch (ITB).
Under general supervision, the incumbent will support the EDD's enterprise IT operations, including hardware and software components and the confidential data managed by the organization. This role is based in the EDD's Infrastructure Services Division (ISD), where the incumbent will be responsible for the implementation, maintenance, and operation of statewide IT systems.
As part of the ITB the incumbent will help shape its transformation into a customer-focused service organization by adhering to the Branch's cultural principles. They will also play a key role in fostering positive communication and building relationships with vendors, colleagues, management, and clients.
This position may offer eligibility for a hybrid work schedule, with telework flexibility determined by the Department's needs. The employee is expected to report to the office on assigned in-office days, with travel costs to the headquarters at 800 Capitol Mall, Sacramento, California, the responsibility of the employee.

Position exists in Sacramento County
Effective July 1, 2025, specific Bargaining Units and associated Excluded State employees are subject to a salary reduction between 2% - 4.62% in exchange for hours in the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) per month. Desirable Qualifications
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
At least 5 years of experience in network support roles, with hands-on experience in at least two of the following areas:
- Load Balancing (LTM and iRule support preferred)
- Network Access Control (NAC) solutions (ClearPass preferred)
- Wi-Fi Networks implementation and support (Aruba preferred)
- Cloud Networking support (AWS preferred)
- VMware NSX-T implementation and support (experience with NSX-T Federation highly desirable)
- Familiarity with Zero-Trust network architecture principles.
- Experience configuring and troubleshooting Cisco routers and switches.
- Understanding of Layer-2 and Layer-3 networking protocols (e.g., BGP, OSPF, LACP, STP).
- Experience supporting and troubleshooting data center network environments.
- Relevant industry certifications (CCNP, PCNSE, JNCIP-ENT, SAA-C03, ANS-C01, Security+).
- Basic proficiency in network automation tools (Python, Ansible, or Terraform).
- Experience working with GIT version control.
- Ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Demonstrated capability to provide technical guidance and mentorship.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity or experience with Linux environments.
