Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of the Special Prosecutions Section (SPS) Senior Assistant Attorney General and the general supervision of the Division of Law Enforcement, Bureau of Investigation Special Agent-in-Charge, the Special Agent Supervisor (SAS) is responsible for leading and conducting complex, high-priority, and often sensitive investigations on behalf of the Attorney General. These investigations frequently involve matters of significant public interest or impact, including but not limited to major financial fraud, tax fraud, human trafficking, public corruption, and other cases within the purview of SPS.

This position demands a high level of independence, judgment, and leadership in investigative execution across California and occasionally in out-of-state jurisdiction. The SAS will not only perform investigative work but also supervise investigative teams in operational settings, ensuring that field operations are carried out effectively and lawfully.

The SAS will engage in a wide range of investigative techniques, including:
  • Analyzing complex financial and public records
  • Interviewing victims, suspects, and witnesses
  • Authorizing search warrants
  • Executing surveillance and search/seizure operations
  • Developing and managing confidential informants
  • Serving as case lead on high-impact, multijurisdictional investigations
Focus and Coordination
This role involves regular and substantive contact with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, as well as prosecutors, and regulatory authorities. The SAS will be expected to cultivate strategic relationships and coordinate investigative efforts across jurisdictions.

The successful candidate will possess a proven ability to operate both independently and as part of a larger prosecutorial team, displaying leadership in the field, sound tactical judgment, and a commitment to public service and the mission of the Department of Justice.

Special Requirements

  • The position(s) require(s) a Drug Screening be passed prior to being hired.

  • The position(s) require(s) Psychological Evaluation clearance prior to being hired.

Candidates must have a current California POST Basic or Specialized Certificate which meets Penal Codes 830.1, 830.2, or 830.3 in order to be considered.

Please note, all new to state employees will be given the minimum salary of the classification. For current state employees, and/or those with reinstatement rights, your salary will be determined in accrodance with the applicable laws, rules, and regulations.

Education Incentive
Agents with an Associate of Science, Associate of Arts, or Intermediate POST certificate will receive a 2.5% salary differential of the base pay. Agents with a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, or Advance POST certificate will receive a 5% salary differential of the base pay, as per Pay Differential 244

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Extensive experience drafting and executing search warrants, including complex financial, digital, and multi-location warrants
  • Strong courtroom testimony experience, including preliminary hearings, grand juries, and trails, especially in complex or sensitive cases
  • Experience working in a vertical prosecution environment, coordinating closely with prosecutors from investigation through case resolution
  • Proven ability to lead investigative teams in operational field settings
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage confidential informants and intelligence sources
  • Strong communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Ability to work under pressure and perform multiple tasks with accuracy, precision and neatness
  • Ability to maintain professional and courteous working relationships with all levels of staff
  • Ability to foster positive working relationships with internal/external customers and/or contacts
  • Ability to successfully lead and supervise a group of individuals
  • Act independently as well as in a team environment
  • Receive and follow directions from supervisor
  • Strong work ethic and attendance
  • Excellent computer skills using Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook
