Branch Chief, Traffic Signals & Ramp Metering
Job Description and Duties
Under the direction of the Supervising Transportation Engineer oversees the staff that plans, maintains, and operates the traffic signals, ramp meters and associated computer and communications systems within Riverside County. A valid California drivers license, and CHP security clearance to enter the TMC is required.
The incumbent will work in a climate-controlled office under artificial light. However, due to periodic problems with the heating and air conditioning, the building temperature may fluctuate. Employee is working in an office and is required to travel to work sites related to the job. Overtime may be required and vacations may be restricted during peak times. The incumbent will be required to travel to meetings and provide training in classroom settings in other office buildings or sites and may be exposed to uneven surfaces, noise and varying temperatures. The incumbent may occasionally travel out of state. This position may be required to telework from home in addition to office work at an assigned location. The amount and availability of telework and/or office work will be determined by the Department based on the functions of each position. Working Conditions
Position located at 13892 Victoria St. Fontana, CA 92336, San Bernardino County.
Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment. This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.Special Requirements
- The incumbent must posses a valid certificate of registration as an Electrical Engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.
Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a State owned or leased vehicle.

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
The incumbent should have experience in design and preparation of plans, specifications and estimates for traffic control systems; electrical and electronic theory as applied to traffic control systems; principles and practices of traffic engineering as they apply to traffic control; various codes and field practices governing the design and installation of traffic control equipment; basic occupational safety and health regulations contained in the Title 8 Industrial Relations, Electrical Safety Orders, safety and health policies and procedures as contained in the Department's Injury and Illness Prevention Program, and the supervisor's role in maintaining an effective injury and illness prevention program; materials and construction cost for traffic control systems; digital electronics, microprocessors and development of strategies for traffic control; counter-based traffic management equipment; principles and techniques of personnel management; a manager's/supervisor's responsibility for promoting equal opportunity in hiring and employee development and promotion, and for maintaining a work environment that is free of discrimination and harassment; planning and supervising the work of others.
