Media Relations Supervisor

The State Water Resources Control Board is seeking an experienced and strategic media and communications professional to join its Communications Office and supervise the agency’s media relations. The State Water Resources Control Board has an opening for a Media Relations Supervisor (Information Officer II) in its Communications Office. The position is located at 1001 I Street, 24th Floor, Sacramento, right in the heart of downtown next to light rail stations and other public transportation. Working Conditions
Positions at the Water Boards may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position and might be expected to comply with after July 1, 2026.
In accordance with the Statewide Telework Policy and GC 14200, the successful candidate must reside in California upon appointment. Proof of residency may be required.
Salary Information - CalHR salary rules allow appointment at the entrance rate (Cal. Code Regs., tit. 2, § 599.673) of a classification. For classes with alternate ranges, placement is based on education/experience. In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
- Five (5) years of successful experience in writing, reporting or editing for a newspaper, news service, radio or television station, or magazine, digital publication or public relations firm .
- At least two (2) years of successful experience with a government or public agency in a position having major duties in public relations or public information involving communicating to the public.
- Experience managing and editing content for a digital publication.
- Experience in personnel management.
- Executive advising and relationship management experience.

Statement of Qualifications
A Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) must be submitted along with the State Application and serves as documentation of candidate’s ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. It should be typed, no more than four (4) pages in length, using 12 point Aptos font , and normal margins.
Indicate your total years of relevant experience, and the professional capacities in which you gained this experience, when answering the following statements/questions:
- Describe your overall approach to media management. What have you found to be successful strategies to promote media interest in certain topics or mitigate negative coverage of sensitive ones? Please provide an example of each.
- Describe your experience advising on media strategy, especially on sensitive or controversial issues. How would you persuade upper management to support your proposed messaging or course of action?
- Describe how you would approach supervising staff with distinct portfolios in a fast-paced office. How would you ensure adequate guidance and oversight while eliciting staff input, creativity and professional development?
- Describe your approach to relationship management as a senior representative of an office that serves multiple divisions and offices of a large agency. How do you ensure open communication and responsiveness to needs and requests?
