Agricultural Engineering (Heavy Equipment) Instructor

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:

This is a full-time, tenure-track faculty position for the Agricultural Engineering (Heavy Equipment Operation) program. The Industrial Technology Department is committed to excellence in education toward certificates, Associate of Science degrees, transfers, and job placement for our majors. The faculty work closely to support each other and our goal of student success.

We seek an instructor with a strong background and experience in industry or teaching, with the ability to work closely with our industry partners and advisory committees. This includes experience operating and maintaining large, construction-related equipment including diagnosing and repairing common issues with diesel engines, power trains, hydraulic, and electrical systems of mobile equipment, including but not limited to: backhoes, dozers, front end and skid steer loaders, excavators, and motor graders. Candidates should also be familiar with common construction techniques, including plan reading, surveying and grade setting.

POSITION DUTIES:
In addition to the responsibilities of the classification description, the specific position is also responsible for:
    • Teach a full academic load in the Agriculture Engineering (Heavy Equipment Operation) program specifically diesel engine, hydraulics, and pneumatic systems.
    • Assist with maintaining all student records and evaluating student transcripts.
    • Maintain positive relationships with people involved in the Agriculture/Construction industry and with professional organizations involved in the different aspects of the industry.
    • Responsible for assisting with maintaining, reviewing, and updating the curriculum and the preparation of course offerings.
    • Participate in department activities such as Butte College farm governance, FFA field days, student recruitment, and outreach.
    • Maintain a safe workplace and teach safe practices.
    • Maintain a clean and organized shop and facilities.
    • Participate in fleet maintenance, upgrading, and acquisition.
    • Maintain currency in existing and developing technologies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Any Bachelor's degree and two years of professional experience; OR
  • Any Associate's degree and six years of professional experience; OR
  • The equivalent (Applicants wishing to be considered for employment under District equivalency standards must submit a detailed statement explaining how you possess the equivalent to the minimum qualifications discussed above.)

* Degree must involve a general education component. Applicants without a degree or with a degree lacking the general education component may be considered if they possess other training and/or experience determined to be equivalent to the general education component. Applicants possessing such training and/or experience are encouraged to request equivalency.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to read, interpret, and understand schematics and equipment repair manuals.
  • Experience in teaching heavy equipment operation, diesel engine systems, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, construction or related subjects in either industrial or educational settings.
  • Demonstrated abilities to work cooperatively with people in the construction industries and educational settings.
  • Experience operating heavy agricultural and heavy construction equipment.
  • Experience working in equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Experience working collaboratively and effectively, in a leadership role, with colleagues, technicians, and students. This should include advising, mentoring, and assisting students and student organizations and clubs.
  • Active member of related professional organizations.
  • Experience in course design and curriculum development.
  • A commitment to safety and sustainable practices.
  • Demonstrates excellence in teaching and a commitment to retention and motivation of students.
  • Possess certificates or appropriate commercial licenses.
  • Experience in California agricultural practices, particularly in the crops and practices used in the Sacramento Valley.
  • Experience in grade setting using conventional and GPS systems for agricultural and construction equipment.
