The Delivery Engineering team sits within OpenAI’s Engineering Acceleration group. We build and operate the Continuous Delivery platform that powers how code and models move from development into our global production infrastructure. Our mission is to give engineers the ability to ship rapidly and reliably, enabling both research and product teams to bring new innovations to more than a billion users while maintaining the highest standards of reliability and safety.

About the Role

The Head of Delivery Engineering will lead the development and operation of OpenAI’s Continuous Delivery platform. This role is pivotal in enabling our engineers to rapidly and reliably move code and data into production at scale. Continuous Delivery is a strategic advantage for OpenAI—accelerating the delivery of new features while ensuring exceptional reliability and safety. Our vision is to “move fast without breaking anything,” empowering developers to leverage pipelines that seamlessly bring innovations to users worldwide.

In this role, you will:

• Drive the evolution of our Delivery Platform to support faster iteration cycles, improved reliability, and reduced deployment friction.

• Enable engineering teams to ship features frequently with confidence, backed by robust testing, monitoring, and rollback capabilities.

• Partner closely with Product, Infrastructure, Observability, and Reliability teams to ensure changes reach production quickly and safely.

• Scale the delivery ecosystem to meet the demands of a growing global user base and a rapidly expanding codebase.

• Lead, grow, and inspire a team of engineers, setting direction and fostering a culture of operational excellence.

You might thrive in this role if you:

• Have 5+ years of experience managing teams in fast-paced, high-performance environments.

• Have 5+ years of experience working with distributed systems at scale.

• Have a strong track record of leading and delivering complex, cross-functional projects.

• Have experience building and scaling world-class engineering teams.

• Excel at coaching and developing engineers to achieve their peak potential.

• Thrive in ambiguity and rapidly changing conditions, bringing clarity and focus to complex problems.

• Care deeply about reliability, safety, and developer experience, and can translate these values into technical strategy.

Location:

Hybrid: This role is in-person at our San Francisco office 3 days a week.
