PRIME Cross-Cutting Unit Supervisor
Job Description and Duties
This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by optimizing data collection and reporting through modernization of the surveillance system administered by the Public Health Program InforMation Exchange (PRIME) Branch.
The Research Scientist Supervisor I (RSS I) for the PRIME CalREDIE Cross-Cutting Support Unit leads a team of research scientist, data scientists, and analysts in the PRIME Branch to modernize the Center for Infectious Disease surveillance system. The RSS I oversees, organizes and prioritizes the team’s daily tasks while fostering a supportive, inclusive, and accessible work environment that upholds accuracy, scientific rigor, and operational quality. The incumbent sets clear, equitable performance expectations and ensures staff have the resources and support needed to meet them. The incumbent guides and monitors the team’s progress on surveillance system modernization tasks, establishes measurable outcomes, and ensures that staff work aligns with program goals, timelines, and regulatory requirements.
Additionally, this position coordinates across multiple organizational units, including the PRIME Branch, Information Technology Services Division (ITSD), Division of Communicable Disease Control (DCDC) programs, and associated vendors to support system design, procurement, configuration, and implementation. Provides coaching and professional development, strengthens staff capability in scientific and analytical methods, and ensures consistent adherence to departmental policies and standards.
The incumbent works under the general direction of the Research Scientist Supervisor II, Chief of the CalREDIE Stakeholder Support Section (CSSS).

Working Conditions
Telework Information
This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework permitted is at the discretion of the Department and is subject to change, consistent with CDPH’s Telework Program. All employees who telework are required to be California residents in accordance with Government Code 14200. Candidates who reside outside of the state of California may be interviewed; however, the selected candidate must have a primary residency in the state of California prior to appointment (and continue to maintain California residency) as a condition of employment. Failure to meet this requirement may result in the job offer being rescinded.
Travel may be required for this position. Reimbursement for travel takes into consideration an employee’s designated headquarters, as reflected in the duty statement, and is subject to regulations and bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the designated headquarters office will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

Please note, at least one year of work experience must include the following experience: full journey level work including planning, organizing, and directing scientific research studies of highly developed scientific scope and complexity. Making independent, complex decisions in their specific scientific specialty. Serving as scientific advisors or consultants to other scientists within their scientific specialty. Adapting methods, techniques, and procedures to carry out assignments. Conducting highly specialized phases of a major scientific project or investigation of sufficient scope which requires coordination with professional staff from other state, local, or federal agencies, academia, or international collaborators. Conducting and presenting scientific research or investigations to the public and scientific community. Using scientific findings to assist in the development of public policies. Drafting and publishing research in scientific journals.
