Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Automotive Program Supervisor II, the Automotive Program Supervisor I supervises a Forensic Documentation Lab that provides BAR Enforcement staff with documented state undercover vehicles and forensic vehicle repair analysis services.

Working Conditions

Candidates who reside outside of the State of California may be admitted to the job interview. However, they must reside in the State of California once they are hired and start working.

Effective July 1, 2025, the State of California implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) which reduces an employee's monthly salary in exchange for leave credits. Employees appointed to this classification will have their monthly salary reduced and will accrue hours of PLP 2025 on the first day of each pay period as outlined on "Section 2113 - Personal Leave Program (PLP)" of the CalHR Manual. The salary range(s) included on this job posting do not reflect the reduction in pay.

The incumbent will work both indoors and outdoors, depending on the situation the incumbent is involved in at any given time. While indoors, the temperature and humidity are reasonably controlled, but while outdoors, the incumbent is exposed to climatic conditions. While driving, the employee is exposed to dust and fumes. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to toxic materials. There is a reasonable expectation of contact with potentially hazardous materials and/or chemicals. Daily access to and use of a personal computer and telephone is essential. Sitting and standing requirements are consistent with office work. The incumbent is required to travel throughout an assigned geographical area by various methods of transportation. Occasional overnight travel may be required.

Special Requirements

Applicants shall have a work record clear of revocation or suspension of departmental-issued licenses for Vehicle Safety Systems Inspection, Smog Technician, and or Smog Inspector.

Drivers License

The position(s) require(s) a valid California driver's license (CDL). Provide a photocopy in PDF format of the front and back of your CDL, clearly showing your name as stated on the license, issuing state, CDL number, class, and expiration.

Medical Evaluation

The position(s) require(s) Medical Clearance prior to being hired.

Conflict of Interest: This position is subject to Title 16, section 3830 of the California Code of Regulations, the Department of Consumer Affairs' Conflict of Interest Regulations. The incumbent is required to submit a Statement of Economic Interests (Form 700) within 30 days of assuming office, annually by April 1, and within 30 days of leaving office.

Drug Test

The position(s) require(s) a Drug Screening be passed prior to being hired.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Knowledge of equipment and methods used in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment.
  • Ability to operate tools used in automotive repair, inspect automotive equipment, purchase parts and materials, keep accurate records of inventory, reconcile and make reports, follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others, work efficiently, report to work on time, maintain consistent, regular attendance, work under changing priorities or deadlines, look and act in a professional manner, and exhibit courteous behavior towards coworkers.
  • Ability to analyze information and make decisions in a competent and timely manner.
  • Ability to ask effective questions, evaluates information, apply guidelines and procedures, and make accurate and timely decisions.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to maximize utilization of computers to accomplish daily tasks.
