POSITION SUMMARY

The Clinical Unit Supervisor is a skilled and experienced professional Registered Nurse (RN) responsible for excellence in the clinical practice of nursing and the management of patient care. Reporting to the Nurse Manager of the Emergency Department/COA, the Clinical Unit Supervisor has 12 hour accountability for organizing, planning, directing, coordinating, and providing high quality, individualized patient/family centered care based on the Watson Model of Care, including the identification and demonstration of abilities to meet special needs and considerations of Age and Population Specific awareness. The Clinical Unit Supervisor will promote the maximum growth and development of the employees and assure patient advocacy under the direction of the Department Leadership. This position requires full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital. It is expected that the employee will demonstrate behavior consistent with the Core Values. The employee shall support Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital's strategic plan and the goals and direction of the quality and performance improvement process activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships while acting as the primary liaison to Medical Staff and other personnel.
  2. Demonstrates teamwork and collaboration with Care Management when facilitating the admission, transfer and discharge of patients.
  3. Anticipates staffing needs and proactively to respond to them.
  4. Assuming shift accountability by setting measurable goals and objectives so that sensitive, caring, optimum quality, and cost effective care is delivered in an environment of compassion, and respect through effective and efficient teamwork and rounding.
  5. Assigns patient beds based upon patient condition, physician orders, unit capacity, and available staffing.
  6. Determines appropriate assignments of unit personnel on each shift, by considering each employee's skills, abilities, competencies, experiences and expertise, given such factors as staffing ratio, patient census, acuity level, complexity of treatment and language needs.
  7. Assigns break times for each employee and relieves each licensed personnel for breaks in compliance with Title 22 regulations.
  8. Delivers direct patient care at times in response to the needs of the unit in accordance with the duties and responsibilities of a staff Registered Nurse.
  9. Maintains a safe and clean environment that complies with regulatory standards including Patient Safety Goals.
  10. Maintains a positive work environment, acts as a good role model for the staff and promotes service excellence that will maintain/improve customer satisfaction.
  11. Actively resolves complaints and/or conflicts involving patients, patients' visitors/families and physicians.
  12. Assists in the interview process of applicants for unit positions and makes recommendations to the Department Leadership.
  13. Provides education, coaching, and remediation, in collaboration with Department leadership.
  14. Assist with the performance evaluation of employees and make recommendations as needed.
  15. Responsible for notifying Department Leadership, House Supervisor of High Risk Events and follow up as appropriate.
  16. Participates in the implementation of the unit specific Quality and Performance Improvement Plan, completes monitoring forms and reports findings to Department Leadership.
  17. Maintains intimate knowledge of Emergency Department/COA policies and procedures and acts as a resource for the RN's in the department.
  18. Other duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

A. Education
  • Associate in Nursing, Nursing Diploma, or equivalent. Bachelor of Sciences degree preferred.

B. Qualifications/Experience
  • Minimum of three (3) years of clinical nursing experience in Emergency Department nursing with regard to regulatory guidelines and standard of practice; including charge nurse experience. Internal candidates will be considered at management's discretion.
  • Certification in Emergency Department Nursing preferred.

C. Special Skills/Knowledge
  • Bilingual skills preferred (Spanish)
  • Basic computer skills
  • Current California Nursing license.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Must complete annual Workplace Violence Prevention Program/Certificate, per hospital policy, during initial training/orientation but not to exceed 30 days from hire/transfer.
  • Experience with an Electronic Medical Record preferred
